“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."

I Thessalonians 5:16-18, (NKJV)

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month
Time to Ask About Your Blood Sugar Numbers
More than 34 million Americans have diabetes. Another 96 million (that’s 1 in 3 Americans) have prediabetes. But many don't know it. Having too much sugar in the blood can hurt your eyes, your blood vessels, and your kidneys. Prediabetes is an early red flag for diabetes. But you can take steps to reverse its course.

If you haven’t paid much attention to your blood sugar, ask your doctor to check your numbers with you.

Factors that make prediabetes and type 2 diabetes more likely.
If you have any of these, talk with your doctor about what you can do to lower your blood sugar levels.
  • Being overweight
  • Age 45 or older
  • Not being physically active (exercising less than 3 times a week)
  • Having a parent, brother or sister with diabetes
  • Having had diabetes during pregnancy (gestational diabetes) or given birth to a baby who weighed over 9 pounds
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Having polycystic ovary syndrome
  • Being African American, Hispanic/Latino American, American Indian, Alaskan Native or Pacific Islander

Things to know:
  • You must bring your Insurance card and driver’s license to your appointment.
  • If you are a female, over 35 years old, and have not had a mammogram in the past year, you are eligible for a mammogram. Ages 35-39 are eligible for 1 scan within those years; 40 and over are eligible annually.
  • Invision Diagnostics will process everything through your insurance, so there is no cost to you!
  • All 3D breast images will be compared to your previous year’s images and read by a Breast Fellowship Board Certified Radiologist. This is why we ask for the date and the location of your last mammogram.
  • Please wear a mask to your appointment as the coach is considered a medical clinic. We will only have one patient on the coach at a time.
  • Patients must provide a Primary Care or OB/GYN provider in order to have a mammogram and receive the results. If you do not have one, please contact Samaritan's Purse Family Medicine.
  • Results of the mammogram will be mailed within 10-14 days to you and your provider.
  • You cannot have any current issues with your breast: Our mobile mammography coach performs routine screening mammograms for women without current breast problems. If you currently have concerns regarding your breast health (i.e. a lump you can feel, nipple discharge, pain, dimpling of the breast, or nipple changes), please contact your primary care or OB/GYN provider immediately.
  • Please allow 30 days between your last COVID booster/vaccine and your Mammogram.
As the flu starts to spread, make sure you’re vaccinated
  • Flu vaccination prevents illnesses, doctor’s visits, hospitalization, and even death.
  • It’s Free!
  • The flu vaccine doesn’t give 100% protection. But if you get sick, it will be milder and shorter.
  • You need a new vaccine each year. The flu vaccine is made to closely match the strains of virus that scientists predict will be circulating this season.
  • Flu outbreaks can occur as early as October and usually peak in January. Because it can take 2 weeks for the vaccine to activate your immune system to fight infection, don’t delay in getting vaccinated.
  • If you haven’t gotten the COVID-19 booster, when eligible, you can get flu and COVID-19 shots at the same time.
  • Flu vaccines are available at your onsite care location, plus most doctors’ offices and pharmacies.
This Thanksgiving, practice being Thankful
Giving thanks has many mental and physical benefits. Showing gratitude and voicing what you’re grateful for can help your overall health.

Studies show that feeling thankful can improve your mood, sleep quality, and ability to fight infection.  It can also ease anxiety and depression and make you -- and those around you -- happier. Rather than focusing on the negative, retrain your mind to think about the people, places, and experiences that make your life richer.

Try to practice being thankful each day. For example, consider:
  • Keeping a notebook.  Write down one thing you are grateful for at the end of each day.
  • Writing a thank you note. Let someone know how they make a positive difference in your life.
  • Taking a walk in nature. This can help clear your mind. It can also help your perspective on things that may seem like very large problems.
  • Paying it forward. Help someone or volunteer in the community.
