February 2018

Greetings!
Susan Guttentag, MD, TIPQC PI
It’s hard to believe that another year has come to a close.  We should all be proud of the amazing work that we’ve done in the past year through TIPQC.  We would appreciate your ideas on how we can help you.  Better yet, join one of our Committees and help us improve TIPQC!
As we approach the TIPQC Annual Meeting, look for more details and educational opportunities in the 2018 Annual Meeting agenda, as well as new project kick offs around the Late Preterm Infant, PPLARC, Opioid Use DIsorder, and Antibitoitic Stewardship.  The limitations of amino acid preparations for IV total parenteral nutrition due to hurricane damage in Puerto Rico may be an unforeseen obstacle to the NICU Nutrition Project that will also be an interesting point for discussion at the Annual Meeting.  I hope to see you there!

PPLARC Project Kick Off

by Nikki Zite, MD
The maternal arm of TIPQC is excited to announce the launch of the Immediate Postpartum Long Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) quality improvement project.  As you may remember this project received the most votes to move forward at the 2017 meeting, and the TIPQC leadership has been working hard with the Department of Health, Tenncare, the MCOs and THA to remove the biggest hurdle to being able to offer women IUDs or contraceptive implants during their delivery hospitalization – getting paid for the devices!  The policy to “unbundle” these contraceptive services from the “global delivery fee” occurred in October 2017 and the process to bill for the devices by hospitals as a separate DRG was official on November 2, 2017.  Vanderbilt Medical Center and The University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville were early adopters and have seen an incredible amount of interest in this option by the women delivering at their institutions.  At the 2018 Annual TIPQC meeting we will report on the successes, unveil the Immediate Post-Partum LARC QI project, and offer workshops to train your team to make this possible at your institution.

Late Preterm Infant Project Kick Off

by Anna Morad, MD and Victoria DeVito, MD
At the 2017 TIPQC annual meeting, the membership voted to develop a project around care of the late preterm infant, focusing on Optimizing Care for of the 34-36 Week Infant in the Newborn Nursery.  This project will kickoff during the annual meeting and will recruit teams from level 1 and 2 newborn nurseries who care for late preterm infants outside of the NICU setting.  The project teams will develop their own protocols based on the National Perinatal Association Multidisciplinary Guidelines for the Care of Late Preterm Infant.  The teams will implement these best care practices along with robust parent education.  The goal of the project is to decrease readmissions of this vulnerable patient population and improve parent satisfaction with education.  The teams will participate in monthly webinars and collect a limited data set of demographic information along with short parent follow-up phone call.  We are excited to get this project started so get your team together!
