CELEBRATE #GIVINGTUESDAY WITH DRI

Giving Tuesday banner image
#GivingTuesday is a global giving movement that celebrates generosity, collaboration, and community on the Tuesday after Thanksgivingthat's tomorrow, December 3rd!
For DRI, #GivingTuesday is a day to come together to support environmental science research and discover solutions for our changing planet.
This year, all #GivingTuesday donations to DRI will go directly scientists through to the Innovation Research Program. Your contribution will enable DRI scientists to pursue their best ideas and find the answers we all need.

RESEARCH NEWS

Lake Tahoe microplastics sampling
Donor-powered research projects tackle environmental problems
Thanks to our donors, seed grants were awarded to eight teams of DRI researchers last year through the Innovation Research Program (IRP), which provides the resources DRI scientists need to pursue groundbreaking new projects.

With those funds, DRI scientists have begun to explore big environmental questions. Has microplastic pollution made its way to the famous blue waters of Lake Tahoe? What can tools used to understand groundwater tell us about how chemo reaches tumors? How is declining snowpack changing mountain environments and economies?

In this blog, explore the projects that science enthusiasts like you have made possible.

Researchers with dust measurement equipment at Oceano Dunes
Dust Control at the Oceano Dunes
The Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area on California’s central coast is a popular destination for ATV, dirt bike, and dune buggy enthusiasts. But all of this activity hasn’t been without impact: these dunes are unusually dusty, which poses an air quality threat to neighboring communities.

DRI researchers led by Jack Gillies, PhD, are investigating this problem by taking hundreds of dust emission measurements from the dunes. They’re also working with state park officials to implement dust control solutions. This work will help park officials make decisions about how to preserve opportunities for recreation while protecting air quality.
