DED, Portland Elms are Holding On (Elm Pruning Prohibited April 15-October 15)

Did you know there are over 4,500 elms in Portland? These elms are located in both the public right-of-way and on private property (See below).

Elm pruning restrictions and elm wood quarantines are important strategies in Urban Forestry's Elm Protection Program.

Proportion of elm inventory by property type
Proportion of elm inventory by property type. (N=4,767 elms)
Snapshot of Portland’s elm inventory and elm management in 2016

  • Portland lost 55 elms due to Dutch elm disease, which accounts for about 1% of all elms
  • Dutch elm disease is a fungal disease that attacks the water-conducting system in elms
  • About half of Portland’s elms consist of varieties that are resistant to Dutch elm disease
  • Urban Forestry treated 129 park elms with fungicide (chemical injected into trees to prevent fungal growth)
  • Neighborhood groups treated 98 street tree elms with fungicide

Spotlight on Education: Arboriculture Program at CCC's Horticulture Department

Did you know that the Horticulture Department at Clackamas Community College (CCC) now offers an Arboriculture Associate of Applied Science degree? According to CCC staff, this is the first arboriculture training program on the West Coast.

The Arboriculture AAS degree will prepare students for entry-level positions like tree climbing, pruning and plant health care management. By the end of the two-year AAS degree, students will be able to:

  • Safely operate standard arboriculture equipment
  • Identify common trees and shrubs
  • Evaluate tree health and implement plant health management strategies
  • Pass the International Society of Arboriculture’s Certified Arborist exam
  • Pass the Oregon Department of Agriculture’s pesticide licensing exams
The program, which trains commercial arborists who specialize in the care and maintenance of trees in urban centers, comes in response to the growing need for arboriculture specialists.

By 2022, the need for arboriculture-based jobs will increase by 26.3 percent, according to the State of Oregon Employment Department’s Occupation Profiles.

For more information, visit the Horticulture Department online at www.clackamas.edu/horticulture, call (503) 594-3292, or email lorettam@clackamas.edu.
