Park Tree Inventory 2018 Wraps Up!
Tree Inventory volunteers work together in Columbia Park. Park Tree Inventory volunteers enter tree data in the park.
Urban Forestry volunteers worked together in parks across Portland this summer, proving that science, community, and fun can all happen at the same time.

With help from over 200 individual volunteers, the Tree Inventory Project wrapped up a successful summer of measuring trees in Portland’s city parks! Volunteers inventoried trees in 23 parks all across the city and put in 2,500 hours of work. To all who volunteered to identify, measure, and map Portland’s park trees this summer, thank you!

Some fun finds from this summer include:

  • A stand of Nordmann firs (Abies nordmanniana) in Gabriel Park
  • Kentucky coffeetrees (Gymnocladus dioica) and 100-year old silver lindens (Tilia tomentosa) at Peninsula Park
  • A cottonwood (Populus trichocarpa) with a diameter of over 6.5 feet at Willamette Park
  • A stand of bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) at Tom McCall Waterfront Park
  • American beech (Fagus grandifolia) and Spanish fir (Abies pinsapo), hard to find in Portland, in Laurelhurst Park
  • A forest of over 400 Douglas-firs (Pseudotsuga menziesii) in Lincoln Park
To see more, check out the complete map of park trees that have been inventoried so far! (Remember to zoom in to see all the tree details.)
Tree Teams that worked with Urban Forestry to inventory their neighborhood parks this summer will use inventory data to plan fun and informative tree walks for spring 2019. Stay tuned to see if a park near you will be transformed into a pop-up arboretum this spring! Also, thank you to everyone who hugged a tree with a DBH tape this summer! Interested in having your neighborhood park inventoried in 2019? We will start accepting applications in January.

What happens next? Tree Summit 2018! We are busy preparing for this annual event on October 27th. At Tree Summit, you will hear about the state of trees in Portland from some of the area’s outstanding scientists.
