"Malnutrition is common among individuals living with cancer. Although evidence suggests that higher diet quality may improve outcomes in certain cancers, including melanoma and hematologic malignancies, few studies have examined the role of diet quality in other cancer types. Consequently, nutritional recommendations for patients with or at risk of malnutrition primarily emphasize calorie and protein intake, with limited evidence to guide recommendations on overall diet quality or dietary patterns. Therefore, the objective of this analysis was to identify common dietary patterns during the first six months following colorectal cancer diagnosis and examine their associations with weight loss, a key indicator of malnutrition.
Four common dietary patterns were identified: Western; Prudent; Refined Grain, Sugar, and Dairy; and High-Fat, High-Protein. Greater adherence to the Refined Grain, Sugar, and Dairy pattern was associated with increased odds of weight loss during the first six months after diagnosis. We also observed evidence that associations differed by tumor site and extent of weight loss.
Because this was a cross-section analysis, the findings may be influenced by reverse causation or residual confounding. Prospective studies are needed to clarify how diet quality and dietary patterns influence weight loss and malnutrition risk following a colorectal cancer diagnosis."
