Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month is celebrated during the month of May. The term AAPI includes cultures spanning the entire Asian continent, including East, Southeast, and South Asia, as well as the Pacific Islands. The variety and multiplicity found in each of these regions and their respective nations makes for an incredibly diverse celebration of Asian and Pacific Islander culture as a whole. Despite this large range of diversity, members of the AAPI community come together to celebrate not only what makes each diaspora different, but also what makes them similar. This sentiment became especially paramount during the COVID-19 Pandemic, when Asian communities suffered acts of hate crimes. Community advocates, allies, and organizations such as Stop AAPI Hate have since worked together to raise awareness of these incidents and develop tools for the prevention of and response to these acts of violence on the AAPI community.  Museums that Celebrate AAPI Visit JACCC, USC Pacific Asia Museum and the Chinese American Museum to support AAPI month. AAPI Heritage Month Interview with Professor Jennifer Abe  Jennifer Shimako Abe, Ph.D., is a professor of psychological science at Loyola Marymount University and a senior research associate at LMU’s Psychology Applied Research Center (PARC). Read more about it here.  Congratulations Elizabeth Westbrook  Elizabeth Westbrook was selected as a 2023 Public Policy Fellow at Squire Patton Boggs Foundation.  Elizabeth “Liz” Westbrook is a Presidential Scholar here at LMU Loyola Law School, and graduated summa cum laude from Loyola Marymount University. She is active in many law school organizations, speaks Mandarin, and externed with the Department of Defense Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies.  She worked last summer for the Metropolitan Crime Unit of the LA City Attorney’s Office, and this summer is working at the LA District Attorney’s Office in a criminal trial unit.  She understands what being a prosecutor entails, with “a progressive vision of what it can become”.  Her aim is to bring to the Office “a mentality of fairness and restorative justice.” Congratulations Ernesto Castillo Ernesto Castillo was selected as a 2023 Human Rights and Sustained Impact Fellow. Ernesto Castillo, a graduate of California State University, will work for the Lone Star Justice Alliance on juvenile justice in minority communities in Texas. Ernesto “has an outstanding record of commitment to policy and political initiatives among Latino communities.” He is the first Foundation Fellow to hold public office at the time of his Fellowship. As an Inglewood Unified School Board Member and City Library Board Commissioner, Ernesto has a history of leadership and a desire to make an impact representing marginalized communities. After graduating with a Political Science and Chicano/a studies degree, Ernesto began advocating for under-waged healthcare workers to partake in educational opportunities at their worksites. At Lone Star, Ernesto will develop briefs for trial and appellate litigation, and training materials to contest the bias toward treating juveniles charged with crimes as adults and the collateral consequences in the Texas criminal court systems.
