Happy Spring!
When you work in water, spring means conference season. I will be speaking at numerous water-focused events in March and April, and I encourage you to stop by to say hello. The list of Events on the Horizon is later in this newsletter.

We also invite you to connect with us through our new LinkedIn page, where we post regular updates and relevant news and events. We will be using LinkedIn to support collaboration groups around PFAS and phosphorus with the goal of creating communications hubs for researchers, government agencies, tribal nations, nonprofit organizations and others to address these critical issues facing our state.
I'm excited that this summer we are supporting four high school camps/programs, seven hands-on field courses for undergraduates, and numerous internship and research opportunities throughout the state. Some of these programs still have a few openings, so please share them with your network.
The Freshwater@UW Summer Research Opportunities program saw a 40 percent increase in applications from students nationwide (100 total!) who are vying for summer research positions at the Universities of Wisconsin campuses. What a great way to showcase our university system!
A huge thanks to the faculty and staff at our 13 universities and to the Wisconsin State Legislature for making these workforce development opportunities available to undergraduates.
Go Team,
Marissa Jablonski
Executive Director

Findings from a $10,000 grant from the Freshwater Collaborative to hire an undergraduate researcher helped Michael Holly and colleagues at UW-Green Bay secure $750,000 from the USDA. The USDA grant will provide support for three graduate research assistantships, multiple undergraduate research assistants, and remote water quality monitoring equipment to study phosphorus filter media.

UW-Stout student El Bartho got hands-on training as a joint intern with the UW-River Falls' Ecological Restoration Institute and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Thanks to Freshwater Collaborative funding, the ERI was able to hire more interns and expand its trainings and certifications in chainsaw safety, aquatic and mosquito pesticide application, ATV and boat safety, wilderness first response training, and wildfire fighter training.

When product engineers at Whirl-Pak, Filtration Group, needed research and development data for their sampling bags, they reached out to the Freshwater Collaborative who connected them to UW Oshkosh's ERIC lab. The university-industry partnership now provides valuable work experience for students, helps solve a business challenge and may reduce plastic pollution.

As the first-ever emerging contaminant outreach specialist at the University of Wisconsin – Extension’s Natural Resources Institute, AJ Jeninga works with the community and local health departments to build a better response to PFAS contamination. She got her start in freshwater research as an undergrad working on a Freshwater Collaborative grant. She's now co-chairing our PFAS Collaboration Group.

Sixteen Freshwater Collaborative Research Fellow projects were featured at the 20th anniversary of Research in the Rotunda on March 6. Topics ranged from PFAS to pesticides to ecosystem health and more. We’ll be featuring student photos and stories over the next few months on our website and social media.
Check out a video from UW-Stout students Aiden Drew and Josh Pederson, who worked on techniques to improve farming methods.

The Freshwater Collaborative and UW Oshkosh partnered with Jacobs Engineering to hire UW students to identify the location and material of service lines in Wisconsin so the state can meet deadlines for the federal Lead and Copper Rule Revisions.
Students from 10 Universities of Wisconsin campuses and three non-UW schools are working with Jacobs staff, local government entities and public utilities to conduct data collection and field work.
