CHOPR Researchers Participate in an Unforgettable Research Experience in the First National Nursing Workforce Study in China

In March 2010, nursing students, teachers, and program leaders from the Nurse Workforce Research Workshop gathered during a four-day meeting in Shanghai. Students were oriented to a unique data set from over 9,000 nurses and 5,400 hospitalized patients from 180 hospitals in nine Chinese provinces.
Dr. Jeannie Cimiotti (left),  Dr. Liming You, PhD, RNProfessor of Nursing, School of Nursing, Sun Yat-sen University (center), and Dr. Linda H. Aiken (right) led the hands-on research analysis workshop at Fudan University, and Tim Cheney (not shown) rounded out the leadership team.

CHOPR's study of the nursing workforce and quality of hospital care in China started in 2008 at the invitation of the China Medical Board - a U.S. nonprofit endowed by the Rockefeller Foundation. Prompted by the country's serious nursing shortage (China had only 1 nurse per 1,000 people), Dr. Linda H. Aiken helped to create the Nursing Network of the China Medical Board (CMB). With funding from the CMB, representatives from eight universities came together to conduct the national study that would connect nursing's key stakeholders and influencers across the country.
A key part of the project turned out to be a major educational program offered to students from the eight participating nursing schools in China. Students were oriented to a unique data set that had been collected in 2008-09. The semester-long independent study provided nursing students with readings and seminar discussions on the opportunities and challenges in international research and healthcare delivery issues in China.
Funding from the University of Pennsylvania made it possible for CHOPR fellows, Danielle Altares Sarik, Heather Tubbs Cooley, Linda Kang, Deena Kelly Costa, Chenjuan (Tina) Ma, and JingJing Shang to travel to China to take part in the four-day workshop.
On a break from the workshop, CHOPR representatives immerse themselves in Chinese culture and traditional garb. From left: Chenjuan (Tina) Ma, PhD, RN, current Assistant Professor, New York University; Deena Kelly Costa, PhD, RN, current Assistant Professor, University of Michigan; Linda Kang, PhD, RN, former Assistant Professor, South Dakota State University (has recently moved to Taiwan); Danielle Altares Sarik, PhD, RN, CPNP-PC, current Research Nurse Scientist, Nicklaus Children's Hospital; JingJing Shang, PhD, RN, current Associate Professor, Columbia University School of Nursing; Jeannie Cimiotti, PhD, RN, FAAN, current Visiting Associate Professor, Emory University; and Tim Cheney, Senior Analyst, Unversity of Pennsylvania.
"The China research experience highlighted the importance of collaboration for me. Learning more about the cultural context of nursing care in China was fascinating, as was seeing the ways that CHOPR’s research could be applied in such a different environment. Good research can be adapted across different environments, and I saw this first hand in China."  Danielle Altares Sarik, PhD, APRN, CPNP-PC

"Having the opportunity to collaborate with Chinese nurse researchers for a week in Shanghai during my time in CHOPR was an unbelievable opportunity. Not only did I learn that research is challenging anywhere, I also learned that what drives nurse researchers to improve care and outcomes is the same regardless of where you live: to help patients." Deena Kelly Costa, PhD, RN

"That trip to China with Linda (Dr. Linda Aiken) and other folks and fellows at CHOPR was such a wonderful and unique experience, especially for someone who originally came from China. I witnessed how nurse scientists from US and China can team up together to advance nursing research and education. Yet, a super fun part of the trip was to walk around Shanghai with my CHOPR folks experiencing the local food, traditions, and daily life." Chenjuan (Tina) Ma, PhD, RN
