Senior Ava Bettermann’s artwork presented for display in Superintendent Tolley’s office
Congratulations to Senior Ava Bettermann whose artwork was presented for display in Superintendent Tolley’s office alongside Principal Criscione, Art Teacher Matt Fry, her mom, and brother on Thursday, November 17. Ava used Guache and colored pencils to create the semi-realism piece that is mainly based on adaptive daydreaming.
| |
Congratulations were further extended, as Ava has been accepted into SCAD: The Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia, where Ava is interested in three majors: Illustration, Sequential Art, and Video Game Design. Ava, who has been enrolled in WHS art courses each year since 9th grade, is currently taking AP Studio Art 2-D Design Portfolio, after taking AP Studio Art Drawing last year as a junior. Ava expressed thanks to Mr. Fry for his instruction and support here at WHS.

Lunchtime Open Campus Privilege for Seniors Only
As outlined in the WHS Student Handbook under Open/Closed Campus (page 16), the open campus privilege at lunchtime is available only to SENIORS. Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors must remain on campus during the school day. All students leaving campus at other times must check out through the Attendance Office (or the nurses) and must carry on their person a yellow Early Dismissal pass from the Attendance Office to present when asked.
If a senior has a parking pass and transports freshmen, sophomores, and/or juniors, the senior will be assigned Saturday School and lose parking privileges for two weeks for the first offense, and for the remainder of the year for the second offense. The parking permit fee will not be refunded.
Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors who leave campus during lunch without prior permission are subject to progressive discipline as outlined under Unexcused Absences (Truancies) on page 21 of the Student Handbook.
As shared at the beginning of the year, the expectation of all students is that they will read, become familiar, and comply with the WHS Student Handbook and the NSD Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook, both of which can be found on the WHS website under Resources.
If you should have any questions, please contact Campus Supervisor Alan Dillman (adillman@nsd.org) or Campus Supervisor Ellen Esteves (eesteves@nsd.org).

Message from your WHS Counselors
Hi Falcon Family,
As we move into the 2nd quarter and the days get shorter, cloudy, wet, and gray, we want to remind you to find ways to take care of you and your mental health.
Here are some things to try to help reduce stress:
- Exercise, go for a walk/run, try yoga, lift weights, or tune into an exercise show on TV
- Practice mindfulness, pay attention to your thoughts and feelings, they become your actions
- Care for others, send a text, write a note, deliver food or treats, say something nice to make another feel better
- Sleep, never underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep!
In reviewing your 1st quarter grades, check if you’re doing as well as you hoped. If not, there is still time to raise grades before they are final at the semester.
Here are some things you can do to improve your progress:
- Talk to your teacher: ask questions, get clarification, stay after school for help
- See your counselor: we can help create a plan to get you back on track!
- Falcon Quest: open now in the library after school until 4:15p and mornings from 7:30-8:05a
- Peer Tutors: we have a list of peer tutors who want to help, reach out to your counselor!
Please know that your WHS Counseling Team is here to support you and help in any way possible.

Washington State now has an earthquake early warning app: "MyShake"
The MyShake App sends a warning to mobile phone users that earthquake shaking is about to occur. The system uses ground-motion sensors to detect earthquakes that have already started and estimates their size, location, and impact. When it detects a significant magnitude, the system issues a ShakeAlert® Message, providing a warning a few seconds before shaking begins.

Reduced or Waived Fees 2022-23
Available by logging into ParentVue and completing the steps in the Student Information Updates module
***Step-by-step instructions on how to submit the consent form in ParentVUE can be found in .pdf HERE. An electronic step-by-step guide is also available on the district website.***
Please note: Part of the process when completing the consent form is families will first verify their information (address, phone, emergency contacts, etc.). The Consent form will appear after the race and preferred language questions. Parents/Guardians need to go through each page and verify information before reaching the consent form. The ParentVUE app on cell phones looks nearly identical to the computer version of ParentVUE for completing the online consent form.
If you qualify for free or reduced price meals, also apply for reduced or waived extra-curricular school fees pursuant to House Bill 1660 (that you may be eligible for) by completing that section of the Student Information Updates in ParentVue* on or after August 15 (see House Bill 1660 details below).
Completing the fee waiver form in ParentVUE* will allow your student's free and reduced status to be shared with those administering extra-curricular activities at our school or within the district, thus being able to waive or reduce certain fees.
Consent must be given each school year and does not carry forward from last school year. Instructions on how to submit the consent form in ParentVUE can be found on the district website.
Once the Consent is submitted through the Student Information Updates portal in ParentVUE, it takes a minimum of 24 hours for the waived fees to show up in TouchBase.
Visit the District website to learn how to apply for free or reduced price meals.
Questions? Betsy Black, Account Specialist eblack@nsd.org Phone: 425-408-7657 Fax: 425-408-7645

High School Accreditation
Woodinville High School is participating in the Washington State Accreditation process this school year.
- This is a voluntary process that takes place every 6 years, where we demonstrate that here at WHS we provide our students with a high quality and rigorous education.
- Accreditation is an inquiry-based process, tightly aligned to our Strategic Action Plan, and the work we do at WHS.
- Accreditation is not only an internal review of how we are doing in meeting our goals, but also an external review process where we share our work and improvement plan with both a site evaluation review team and a state level review panel.
We are excited about the process and showing off what a great school we have!

From the WHS Health Room
COVID Updates:
The Washington State Department of Health has provided new guidance for schools this fall. Please review the Symptom and Exposure Flowchart for Schools and learn about the Northshore School District's COVID information on our Health Room website so you are prepared for the school year. You'll find details about what to do if your child has:
- Symptoms,
- If your child is exposed to COVID,
- What kind of test your child should have,
- What to do if your child tests positive, and
- How you will be notified of COVID cases at school.
Other Illnesses:
To avoid the spread of illness other than COVID, follow these guidelines when deciding whether your child is healthy enough for school. In addition to the COVID guidelines, if your child has any of the symptoms below, please keep him/her at home until the symptoms subside:
- APPEARANCE/BEHAVIOR: unusually tired, difficult to wake, pale, skin rash, lack of appetite; these are often signs of underlying illness.
- FEVER: temperature of 100 degrees or higher in the past 24 hours
- VOMITING/DIARRHEA: within the past 24 hours.
- RASH: Any rash of unknown cause should be considered contagious. Please have your child examined by a health care provider to determine the cause and communicability of the rash before sending him/her to school. The school may require a note from the health care provider stating that the rash is not contagious.
- Other: For other specific diseases or health difficulties it is always a good idea to contact the school nurse. We are happy to share information and resources anytime!
Students must be fever-free without fever reducing medication and other symptoms improving before returning to school.
Medications at School:
If your student will be taking any medication at school, please contact the school nurse. The Northshore School District recommends that medication be taken at home whenever possible. We recognize, however, that in some cases it is essential that medication be administered during the school day. Learn about the procedures for the handling of ALL medications in the schools, as well as find the authorization form, on our Health Room website.
Please do not put any kind of medicine, including Tylenol, vitamins, and cough drops in your child's lunch box, backpack or pockets. Unidentified medicine can never be given at school.
Please feel free to contact us at any time to discuss health concerns about your student.
