Ward 9 newletter header
Hello Davenport school friends, neighbours and families,
As the holidays approach, the days have gotten shorter and the excitement (in my household and in schools across the city) is growing. My family and I have been reflecting on how much we have to be thankful for, with loved ones visiting, plentiful food, a warm house, and children that are benefiting from a strong, public education. The kids are a little grumpy about staying in school until Friday (!) but looking forward to some time off.
Heading into 2017, I wanted to share with you a fantastic project I have been involved in. A few years ago, I happened to meet singer/songwriter Leslie Feist in our community. Leslie told me she had been in Malawi recently with Dignitas International and wanted to collect backpacks for children and teens living there with HIV/AIDS. You can read more about this initiative below... We collected 1000 backpacks last year through the community and the great students at Dovercourt Public School and The Grove Community School (congrats!). Leslie even visited the students and thanked them personally. To get involved, check out the information below. Our goal this year is 6000 backpacks!
Have a safe and happy holiday, and best wishes to all in the New Year!
Regards,
Marit

Bloor Dufferin Redevelopment and NEW SCHOOL
On December 8 the TDSB, Toronto Land Corporation, City of Toronto and Province announced plans for the redevelopment of the TDSB-owned lands at Bloor and Dufferin. This redevelopment will incude a newly built highschool to house Bloor Collegiate Institute and Alpha II students, affordable childcare spaces, and a 30,000 sq ft community hub.
When I first ran for Trustee in 2014 the TDSB had voted to sell-off 7.3 acres and there was apparently no further room for discussion. Minor retrofits of a school, no commitment to keep childcare spaces or affordable housing, little transparency and no vision.  The community advocated for more, and now, after working closely with counterparts at the City and Province, and pausing the sale to work to ensure a community benefit, we have come a long, long way toward meeting our goals
This is an unprecedented announcement. School Boards are under huge pressure from the provincial government to sell off our 'surplus' land and buildings. Throughout this process, I was determined to ensure that if this land was going to be sold and developed, our legacy would be to ensure the community benefited in some way, and that there was direct benefit to our school. Today we are further down that road.... now the real work begins!
The province and city have hired facilitators to engage in a process to determine how the community hub will work and what will be located there.
For more information and to get involved, please email:
sonja@snmanagement.com
The developer will be negotiating now with the City and meeting with the school and community before plans are developed. For more information about this process, please contact our City Councillor, Ana Bailao at: councillor_bailao@toronto.ca
Thanks to all of the parents, families and neighbours who helped exert the pressure necessary to make this happen... Your voices, energy and focus made all this possible.
Backpacks for Malawi
Ward 9 schools have an opportunity to collect used and new backpacks for an initiative launched by Leslie Feist for Dignitas International Teen Club.
The Teen Club serves thousands of kids from 6-20 years old living with HIV/AIDS in Malawi. They offer social support and education on living with the disease, along with medical monitoring and monthly medication.
On a trip to Malawi, Leslie learned that many of these children needed bags to help keep their medication safe and maintain privacy in a country that still stigmatizes HIV. She thought of all those unused backpacks sitting in Toronto basements and closets, and how she might get them into the hands of Malawian kids. She met me (a Trustee) and next thing you know we had some schools signed on to help out.
The response was so great, that this year the goal has been raised to 6000 backpacks.
Can your school help? We will bring the boxes, posters and excitement, along with a letter that can be shared with families. Students bring their used or gently worn backpacks and can even include a letter. The backpack drive will take place between January 9 and February 3, 2017. Contact Marit for more information at marit.stiles@tdsb.on.ca

Emerging Childcare Issue
Many parents have reached out to discuss childcare concerns. Access to quality affordable childcare is an enormous challenge for many families.
Recently the TDSB learned that the City’s draft 2017 budget proposes cuts that could have a tremendous impact on our childcare families and centres.
Several important motions were brought forward at our board meeting of December 7 and they were passed unanimously.
I will share resources for parent engagement as soon as they are ready. In the meantime, please spread the word and share your concerns with your City Councillor.

TDSB Chair and Vice Chair Elected
Robin Pilkey was acclaimed Chair of the Toronto District School Board during the annual Organizational Board meeting on December 1, 2016. Trustee Chris Moise was elected to the position of Vice Chair. Chair Pilkey, who was also acclaimed Chair last December, was first elected as Trustee for Parkdale-High Park in the fall of 2014. Vice Chair Moise was first elected as Trustee for Toronto Centre-Rosedale in June of 2016. For detailed results of the elections, as well as the schedule and agendas for Board and Standing Committees, please visit www.tdsb.on.ca/boardroom.
High School Information Nights
To help you make an informed decision when choosing a high school, TDSB schools host information nights for parents and Grade 8 students each year between October and January. Learn everything you need to know about our incredible variety of schools, programs and courses. The dates and times for all High School Information Nights are available online at www.tdsb.on.ca/goingtohighschool.
Cancellation of Busses During Severe Weather
Severe weather conditions may require the TDSB to cancel transportation or, in extreme conditions, close schools. The decision to close schools is made by the director of education. In the event transportation is cancelled or schools are closed, the local media will be informed before the beginning of the school day. Tune in to your radio and television news stations for the latest information or visit www.tdsb.on.ca.
Stay Healthy During Flu Season
Flu season is here again. In Canada, flu season tends to run between October and April. The Ontario Government is encouraging Ontarians to avoid getting sick this flu season by getting their annual flu shot.
Toronto Public Health is recommending that whenever students and staff experience flu-like symptoms, they are sent home and do not return to school until they are no longer infectious to others. Therefore, ill students and staff should be symptom-free (especially from vomiting and diarrhea) for at least 48 hours before returning to school.
The primary concern is for the health and safety of all students and staff. Please note that no special measures are required when there is a case of influenza in a school or daycare. However, everyone should do their part to stop the spread of the flu. As parents, you can also assist by:
  • reminding children to wash their hands often especially after using the washroom and before and after eating;
  • reminding children to cover their sneeze and cough;
  • watching for symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, and/or high fever;
  • informing the school if your child is ill;
  • keeping your child at home when he/she is ill.
For more information, please visit Toronto Public Health www.toronto.ca/health, contact your family doctor, or Telehealth Ontario 1-866-797-0000.
Traffic Safety Tips: Help Make this a Safe and Active Winter Season
As winter approaches, we know that colder temperatures and snowy conditions will likely be part of our daily lives for the next several months. Although walking to school during the winter may require wearing a few more layers and taking extra safety precautions, it can be a fun way for students and their families to stay active throughout the year.
Traffic safety is an important matter all year long.  However, with limited daylight hours during the winter months, it is a particularly important to review what we can do to keep students safe. The need to be aware and alert at all times, on any road, and even in the most routine circumstances is key to traffic safety. This applies to students and drivers alike. Road conditions can be challenging in the winter months. So to those of us who drive, please take extra care on the roads and in parking lots, especially in areas where children might be present.
School staff periodically review street and traffic safety with students. Parents can help reinforce these safety messages with children at home. Below are some tips that might be helpful to review.
  • Stop, look, and listen for traffic.
  • Only cross at corners and crosswalks.
  • Make eye contact with drivers.
  • Walk on the right side of the crosswalk.
  • Wear appropriate footwear to reduce the chances of slipping.
  • Wear brightly coloured or reflective clothing, particularly when out at dawn, dusk or at night.
  • Never run into the street.
  • Obey crossing signals.
  • Cross only if clear.
  • Walk on sidewalks.
  • Where there are no sidewalks, walk as far away from traffic as possible, facing traffic.
The safety of our students is always a top priority. Let’s work together to make the winter season safe so we can enjoy all it has to offer.
