Portland Regional Tree Climbing Competition Highlights & Video
On Saturday, June 17, 2017, the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture, with the support of PP&R Urban Forestry, hosted an educational event and skills competition in Portland, in our own Laurelhurst Park.

| | |
L-R: Dan Kraus (1st Overall), Robert Bundy (2nd Overall), Rick Bunch (4th Overall). |
|
Twenty-eight competitors from around the region, and some from as far away as British Columbia and France, participated in the Portland event. The 2005 International Tree Climbing Champion, Dan Kraus, took the crown as the best climber in the region. Urban Forestry's own arborist, Rick Bunch, took 3rd in the Work Climb and 4th Overall. Congratulations to all of our participants and competitors!

Laurelhurst Park was an excellent venue to showcase some serious tree climbing skills. |
|
Special thanks to all of the judges and sponsors, and especially to our volunteers for helping to make this event a success.
A Portland park near you will once again be the host location for the 2018 Regional Tree Climbing Competition! Stay tuned.

Portland's parks hold over 1.2 million trees and are often home to the biggest and most impressive tree specimens in our neighborhoods.

Hoyt Arboretum Curator, Martin Nicholson, helps identify a dawn redwood tree in Brentwood Park. |
|
Our parks are also home to a diverse collection of trees from all over the world. Staff and volunteers have been having a great time identifying them!
In just two workdays, volunteers have inventoried 273 trees, and found over 50 individual species!
Special thanks to our 65 Team Leaders who completed 2 days of training in species ID and data collection protocol prior to the start of inventory season.
Without this group of experts to lead our volunteers in the field, we wouldn’t be able to take on the task of inventorying thousands of trees at 12 neighborhood parks this summer.
Register for one of 14 remaining events this summer, and see what we’ve been up to on our Flickr page.
