Pilot program supports early-stage therapeutic projects
The School of Medicine Basic Sciences and the Office of the Vice Provost for Research and Innovation have launched the Innovation Ignition Fund. Selected projects will receive up to $500,000 over two years and industry mentorship from drug development experts at Vanderbilt. Applications will be accepted beginning Feb. 1.

The new study co-authored by Alvin Powers (Medicine) and published Dec. 4 in the journal Nature lays the foundation for identifying additional early disease-driving events for type 2 diabetes and also provides a template for identifying regulatory networks that drive other diseases.

Robert Coffey (Medicine), an internationally recognized expert on colorectal cancer, was recently invited to present his research to representatives of President Joe Biden’s reignited Cancer Moonshot initiative. President Biden has set a new national goal that includes reducing the death rate from cancer by at least 50 percent over the next 25 years.

Oliver part of youth education grant
A group of Vanderbilt researchers, including Kendra H. Oliver (Pharmacology), are part of a National Science Foundation grant to investigate the potential of place-based learning and digital storytelling to nurture middle school youths’ sense of personal agency, STEM career knowledge and affiliation, and STEM identity play. Oliver’s role be to support students interested in creating stories with augmented reality.

Registration for the CSB Symposium 2024 is now open! The event is scheduled for March 28 and features scientific talks from preeminent structural biologists Nozomi Ando, James Fraser, Jeanne Hardy, and Andrey Sali. There will also be a poster session and Science Jeopardy hosted by Ray Blind (Medicine).

Second annual VIRAL International Symposium
The second annual symposium of the Vanderbilt International Researchers Alliance, “Research and Stories,” is scheduled for April 18 at the Community Event Space on Greek Row. Registration is now open through April 1. Abstracts submissions are due by March 9. All international trainees are encouraged to share their stories as international researchers through talks, posters, or at the happy hour!
