With the date of our annual meeting quickly approaching in October, I would like to once again encourage you to join us on October 15th and 16th. We have an engaging two days of speakers, panels, and demonstrations that will be enjoyable, thought-provoking, and a valuable use of time. A detailed agenda is available on our website, so please visit it for more details. Event Overview: Our annual meeting provides a public forum to discuss VACCINE activities and the challenges of visual analytics, data, and homeland security.  The event also includes invited presentations, panel discussions and a technology showcase of decision-making tools with hands-on demonstrations of state-of-the-art technologies. U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Homeland Security, law enforcement, and emergency response personnel, as well as faculty and students from Purdue and our 26 member schools will be in attendance and actively participating in this event. We welcome attendees from any government, corporate, or non-profit agencies associated with homeland security or visual and data analytics issues to ensure a broad range of input and perspective on important challenges facing our nation's overall security.
Distinguished Keynote Speakers: U.S. Congresswoman Susan Brooks as well as U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral Kevin Cook and Vice Admiral Charles Michel.

Greater Cleveland Rapid Transit Authority (GCRTA) eBOLO Project
Members from VACCINE met in Cleveland in September with the team working on the ongoing eBOLO project for the Greater Cleveland Rapid Transit Authority (GCTRA). This project is utilizing the expertise of the DHS Centers of Excellence to develop an electronic BOLO “be on the lookout” system that will address a number of security threats and safety issues while using a GCTRA light rail station as a test bed.

 IACP (International Association of Chiefs of Police) Annual Conference Includes Three VACCINE Technologies
The 2014 IACP (International Association of Chiefs of Police) Annual Conference will include the presentation of three VACCINE technologies. This event that takes place in Orlando, Florida from October 25th-28th involves more than 10,000 professionals representing all sectors of law enforcement who are looking for new information, products and services to improve their agency operations. 
On October 26th, VACCINE will present, “Enhancing Community Safety: Gang Graffiti Automatic Recognition and Interpretation System (GARI).” The Gang Graffiti Automatic Recognition and Interpretation System is a mobile device application that analyzes gang graffiti by using images of graffiti and immediately receives an interpretation of the gang affiliation and what the graffiti means.
Also, on October 26th, VACCINE will present, “Leveraging Social Media to Improve Disaster Response and Recovery.” When a disaster strikes, the Internet is flooded with microblogs, Tweets, and other social media posts. The Social Media Analytics and Reporting Toolkit (SMART) is a social media analysis system that provides analysts with scalable analysis and visualization of social media posts.
On October 28th, VACCINE will present, “Using Analytics to Stay Ahead of Crime.” In an effort to work smarter, not harder, the VALET (Visual Analytics Law Enforcement Toolkit) allows first responders to pull data using smartphones and computers to be better prepared when incidents occur. VALET analyzes and shares real-time data to save resources and lives.
 VACCINE Student’s Project Selected to 2014 ECE Corporate Workshop Poster Session
VACCINE student Niveah Abraham’s recent project, “Visual and Data Analytics,” has been selected for presentation during the ECE Corporate Workshop Poster Session. The Corporate Workshop brings together representatives from many of the top companies in the field to learn about research and academic programs in ECE. These companies are interested in recruiting students for internships and full time positions. Participants this year include AT&T, Bloomberg, Boeing, Caterpillar, Ford, GE, GM, IBM, Intel, John Deere, Rolls Royce, Texas Instruments, and others. 
Multiple VACCINE Tools Featured During Pilot Virtual Technology Showcase
DHS S&T hosted a pilot of the first Centers of Excellence Virtual Technology Showcase featuring law enforcement technologies on September 30th. Five of the VACCINE Center’s tools were included in this Virtual Technology Showcase: VALET (crime analytics), MERGE (hazmat placard image recognition), cgSARVA (Coast Guard search and rescue visual analytics), GARI (gang graffiti recognition), and SMART (social media analytics). GARI was selected as a featured tool that also included a live chat session with VACCINE Managing Director, Kaethe Beck.
- VACCINE was awarded a patent in September on its Visual Analytics Law Enforcement Toolkit (VALET). Having such a patent will strengthen the commercialization position of this tool which has been attracting numerous interested parties in licensing ventures with VACCINE.
- VACCINE Director Dr. David Ebert and Kaethe Beck, VACCINE Managing Director, were hosted in September by the U.S. Coast Guard headquarters in Washington, D.C. for a meeting with several Coast Guard officials including Vice-Admiral Charles Michel, Rear Admiral Mark Butt, and Rear Admiral (Ret.) Mary Landry. The meeting was to explore new synergies between the organizations that would also maximize their existing successful past working relationship.
- VACCINE Managing Director Kaethe Beck and VACCINE’s Engagement and Transition Manager, Heather Connell, toured the Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center and the Westgate Crane Technology Park. The agencies explored how their combined areas of expertise could be leveraged to better meet the needs of various homeland security related projects and clients.
- Vinodh Sankranthi, Manager Innovation and Solutions Roadmap for John Deere Financial, and Kevin Hendress, Technology Solutions Architect visited the VACCINE laboratory on September 30th. The Deere representatives were given a demonstration of the Center’s social media analysis tool, SMART (Social Media Analytics and Reporting Toolkit) and had discussions over its potential use within John Deere.
- VACCINE welcomed a new addition to its staff in September. Jen Christopher joined the VACCINE team as the Program Outreach Specialist and in that role will be managing the Center’s education and training efforts. 
VACCINE hosted an informational webinar on VACCINE’s gang graffiti recognition and interpretation system, GARI, for the Vice President of Business Development, Homeland Security & Law Enforcement, and the GangNet Product owner of SRA. The groups explored if future collaborations may be possible. 
- As last year’s host of the National Strategic Maritime  Risk Stakeholder’s Alliance meeting, VACCINE encourages interested parties to register for this year’s Maritime Risk Symposium being hosted by the CREATE Center at the University of Southern California on November 18th-19th, 2014. - The University of Notre Dame has an opening for an Associate Director for the Wireless Institute. The Wireless Institute (WI) in the College of Engineering is a center of research, education, commercialization, and outreach activities that develops wireless communication & networking technologies, applications, and economic & policy studies.Full posting.
- The Computer Science and Mathematics (CSM) Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites outstanding candidates to apply for the Alston S.
