D1 Town Hall recap, Town Hall upcoming Sept. 14

Council Member Michelle Watkins held a town hall on Aug. 17 and residents heard presentations from Landscape Management Director Brian Walker that included maintenance of city ditches as well as Public Works Director Chris McNeese, who shared about road resurfacing and garbage collection. Walker and McNeese also answered questions from residents in attendance.

Council Member Watkins will hold another town hall on Monday, Sept. 14, at 5:30 p.m. at the North Huntsville Public Library, 3011 Sparkman Dr. NW. Huntsville Police North Precinct Commander Capt. Scott Widner and the Huntsville Police Citizens Advisory Council will speak as well as Urban and Economic Development Director Shane Davis and City Engineer Kathy Martin will provide an update on Northern Bypass construction.

'Every resident deserves to feel safe'

Council Member Watkins held a news conference on Aug. 7 to express her support for victims and their families after a string of shootings in Huntsville. “Every resident deserves to feel safe in their neighborhood and these incidents serve as a painful reminder of the work that remains before us,” Council Member Watkins said. City Administrator John Hamilton and Huntsville Police Chief Kirk Giles joined Council Member Watkins at the news conference.

Honoring Service of Col. Erin Eike at Redstone

Council Members Watkins and Jennie Robinson at the Aug. 13 Council meeting sponsored a Council resolution honoring Col. Erin Eike, who relinquished command as Garrison Commander at Redstone Arsenal on Aug. 18. “The City of Huntsville is pleased to recognize her remarkable tenure and is grateful that she will continue serving the community in her next Army assignment with the Space and Missile Defense Command,” the resolution said in part.

Huntsville Music Month Rocks September

While Huntsville’s music scene is soaring to unprecedented heights, the highlight each year is Huntsville Music Month in September. More than 200 live music events are scheduled throughout the month at venues across Huntsville. Music Month also includes reformatted events such as LAUNCHPAD and the return of the Rocket City Ramble at AMERICANAFEST in Nashville.

Jazz in the Park also returns to Big Spring Park West with concerts each Sunday in September from 5-9 p.m.

Parks & Recreation's Fall Program Guide

Parks & Recreation’s 2026 Fall Program Guide features more than 150 free activities, workshops and special events that promise fall fun for all ages. Residents can find traditional sports like basketball and pickleball in the guide as well as unique offerings such as card-playing groups, a variety of dance classes and “sew-cial” circles who break out the needle and thread.

Honoring History of Railroad Museum

Council Members Watkins and David Little recently honored the North Alabama Railroad Museum (NARM) with a Council resolution commemorating their 60th anniversary. Located at 694 Chase Rd. NE, NARM has operated since 1966 with the commitment to preserving railroad history.

“For 60 years, the Museum has enriched the cultural life of the Huntsville community through the dedication of its volunteers, the preservation of historic artifacts, and its commitment to education and heritage tourism,” the resolution said in part.

Tribute to Huntsville Police Hero

The City held a ceremony on Aug. 25 to recognize the installation of signs along U.S. 72 East honoring Huntsville Police Agent Billy Clardy III, who died in the line of duty in 2019 while investigating a large-scale drug trafficking operation. The “Billy Clardy III Memorial Mile” memorializes his service and dedication to helping keep Huntsville safe.

“This memorial mile marker is a permanent reminder that Billy was here, that his service mattered and that the impact he made continues today,” HPD Chief Kirk Giles said.

Helping at Harris Home for Children

Council Member Watkins joined the Harris Home for Children for renovations at their Huntsville facility on Church Street. Improvements included painting, door repair, new furniture and new equipment. The exterior was also power washed, and the donation closet was cleaned.

District 1 Beautification Award Winner

Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church recently received the District 1 Most Outstanding Property at the City’s Beautification Awards ceremony. The Beautification Board annually recognizes exceptional landscaping of local businesses and organizations with the goal of encouraging and applauding beautification efforts throughout Huntsville.
