Thanksgiving in the Year 2020
It is no secret that this has been a tumultuous year for everyone. We are so proud of all of you for your strength and perseverance in the face of so much adversity. For many of us, Thanksgiving will look quite different this year, but we still have much to be grateful for. Simple things like good health, the support of family and friends, access to education and new opportunities, having a roof over our heads- many of these have taken on a deeper meaning for us this holiday season. We have dealt with a great deal of loss and grief, but it has given us new perspective on practicing gratitude for the blessings that still belong to us. It is our hope that you all continue to stay safe, take time to rest and relax, and find ways to reconnect with the people who matter most in your lives.
Loyola has provided the following tips for making this Thanksgiving safe and successful for everyone.
If you're traveling by car:
- Pack snacks, meals, and drinks so you don’t have to make frequent stops.
- Use disinfecting wipes before touching the gas pump.
- Social distance and mask in all public areas when you stop.
- Pack hand sanitizer and wash your hands frequently.
If you're traveling by plane:
- If possible, use contactless check-in and ticketing options at the airport
- Social distance while waiting in lines and avoid crowded areas
- Pack hand sanitizer and wash your hands frequently
- Wear your mask at all times. It’s required at the New Orleans Airport and on most airlines
For when you’re at home:
- Always remember to thoroughly wash your hands
- If weather permits, consider moving dinner outside or opening multiple windows to increase the ventilation in your home.
- Reduce shared items. Avoid sharing serving utensils and glassware. Replace dish towels and hand towels with disposable options.
- Limit gatherings in spaces where food is being prepared. Have one person (masked) serve the food rather than doing a buffet.
- Wear a mask when you’re not eating and continue to social distance. Avoid hugs and handshakes.
- Shorten your visit. The longer you spend with others, the more risk of exposure.
Each issue we will feature an online student or faculty/staff member who embodies the Ignatian ideals of faith, truth, justice, and service in our online community. If you'd like to nominate someone, please contact ssconlinega@loyno.edu to share who and why you think deserves to be in the spotlight.
