Message from Yvonne Harris, Ph.D., Associate Vice PresidentSpring has sprung, and we’re happy to bring you another edition of The Lens for this April newsletter. You may find that this edition is shorter than our regular installments, but not to worry! We’ll have more content again for the next newsletter. With that said, let’s hit it off with our first topic: The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The IACUC reviews research, teaching, and training protocols conducted by Sacramento State that involve live vertebrate animals on campus. More information, including how to get started, can be found under the first title of this newsletter.
Next, an update on Export Controls in Research, and how they are most likely to affect research activities. To learn more, have a look at their SharePoint site below.
Sign up now for our numerous Proposal Writing Workshops, being held from June 5th to June 16th. Information about these workshops can be found further down.
On April 5th, The Carlsen Center in the Library hosted the 2023 Sunstone CSU Startup Launch Competition. The two winners from the event received an accumulated $2,500 check, as well as an opportunity to represent Sacramento State at the San Jose competition on May 5th. An informative write-up by Rafael Gacael-Sinclair can be found halfway through this newsletter.
Recently, authors James P. Cerney, Aleksey Raskovalov, Monica Nasseri, Madeline D. Silva, and Katherine D. McReynolds published an outstanding research article titled Synthesis and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Structural Evaluation of Oxime-Linked Oligosialic Acid-Based Glycodendrimers. Follow the link attached below for the full story under “Other Exciting News: Biomacromolecules Journal Publication”.
Don’t forget, indications of interest to submit a proposal for NSF’s Major Research Instrumentation award are due internally on May 27th. This is our last announcement prior to this deadline; faculty will need some lead time to assemble a team of researchers and get a required letter from your dean approving instrument costs.
As for upcoming events, the Create, Make & Share Faire is upon us! Join the first annual Create, Make & Share Faire on April 21st from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the StingerStudio Makerspace, Library 1529. For more information, visit the Student Research Center website. Registration is now open, and attached at the end of this newsletter. The other upcoming event, Discussion, Discovery, and Disseminations (D3) will be held on April 26th in the Alumni Center. More information regarding this event can also be found at the end of this newsletter.

Export Controls in Research
Export Controls are most likely to affect research activities. Any of the reasons listed below should be discussed and potentially negotiated prior to entering a contract or submitting a proposal:
- The funder restricts publication, requires approval prior to publication, or delay to publication for an extended period of time. This is not the same as a funder’s request to pre-review a publication to check for errors or proprietary information, which is an accepted practice.
- The funder has set restrictions on who can and cannot conduct research on the grant.
- The research will involve export-controlled equipment or information. This is not always clearly stated in an agreement, but the provider of equipment or information should be asked to disclose any transfer of export controlled items.
To learn more about Export Controls in Research, please visit our SharePoint site.

ORCID Connecting Research and Researchers
In coordination with the CSU Chancellor’s Office, Sacrament State encourages all researchers- faculty and students alike- to register for an ORCID ID.
ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is a unique, persistent identifier that ensures that all your work is properly attributed to you. ORCID is a non-profit organization supported by a global network of institutions, including research organizations, publishers, funders, professional associations, and other stakeholders in the research ecosystem.
When you register for an ORCID ID (a process that should take about one minute), you will receive a unique, persistent identifier that will endure throughout your career. It is not affected by name changes, cultural differences in name order, inconsistent abbreviations and formats, or use of different alphabets.
Your ORCID ID will:
- Distinguish your work from that of others in the field
- Ensure that you are accurately linked with your research contributions & affiliations
- Save time on repetitive data entry for funding, publishing, and research reporting workflows
- Associate any name variants you have used with your profile
- Give you control over what is made public, private, or visible only to trusted parties

2023 Sunstone CSU Startup Launch Competition
Two Startups founded by Sacramento State students are on their way to San Jose to compete in the first-ever CSU systemwide pitch competition.
On the evening of April 5th, the Carlsen Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship hosted the University-Wide Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competition - the first-ever Sacramento State campus-wide pitch competition. 20 student startups applied, and nine finalists were chosen on March 17th to compete. Each of the finalists participated in one of two mentoring sessions on March 29th and 30th to prepare them for the competition.
The nine startups that competed for a share of $2,500 in cash were:
- AM Paper
- Buzly
- Coffee on the Rocks
- Rezidenc
- Sac State Plant Nursery
- whereEV
- Total Control Aero
- Firegression
- Sprout for Life Microgreens
Each startup had a strict time limit of five minutes to pitch their startup and five minutes to answer questions from a panel of judges comprised of four esteemed members of the Sacramento business and entrepreneurship community. All nine pitches were excellent, and it was not easy for the judges to choose only two winners.
whereEV, founded by Enrique Alcacer and Joshua Maddox, placed 1st and won $1,500. whereEV is developing an app that will significantly reduce the range anxiety of electric vehicle owners by enabling them to access public-free and for-profit charging stations as well as private residential charging stations.
Total Control Aero, founded by James Gouveia, placed 2nd and won $1,000. Total Control Aero is developing a programable and flexible rear air foil that will increase the speed and performance of race cars.
whereEV and Total Control Aero will represent Sacramento State at the inaugural CSU systemwide pitch competition – the 2023 Sunstone CSU Startup Launch Competition - at San Jose State University on May 5th. 18 of the 23 CSU campuses are sending one or two teams each to compete for a share of $200,000. Sunstone Management, the title sponsor for the event, provided all of the prize money for 5 tracks:
- 2 product tracks
- 2 service tracks
- 1 social entrepreneurship track
The prize for each track is:
- $25,000 for 1st place
- $10,000 for 2nd place
- $5,000 for 3rd place
The CSU Office of the Chancellor and each of the 18 campuses provided funds to cover all of the other costs of the competition. The San Jose State University Office of Innovation is hosting this event. The program starts with a group dinner on May 4th, followed by breakfast, the pitch competition, and lunch on May 5th.
We would like to thank all those who made the first-ever Sacramento State University-wide Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competition possible, including, but not limited to:
- All of the team members of all 9 startups for their time and effort of putting together, practicing, and perfecting their pitches
- Abhita Vohra, David J. Lopez, Gary Simon, and Nikki Sims for serving as judges, evaluating the nine startups, and choosing the two winners
- Cameron Law and Arlene Miranda of the Carlsen Center for organizing and hosting this fun and fantastic event and providing the $2,500 in prize money
- Cameron Law, Conner Johnston, J.D., Dick Gourley, Jessie Becker Alexander, Professor Nam Kyoon Kim Ph.D., and Rafael Gacel-Sinclair for mentoring the startups before the competition
- Provost Carlos Nevarez, Ph.D. and the Office of the Provost for providing the $7,500 to cover Sacramento State’s share of costs for the 2023 Sunstone CSU Startup Launch Competition.
