Big Crowd at District 5 Town Hall
I held my first town hall of the year last month at the new West Huntsville Recreation Center and the response was overwhelming. Extra chairs were brought in as people packed into the meeting room and even then, it wasn’t enough. I appreciate everyone who came and had the patience to stand throughout the meeting.
Thanks also go out to Director of Urban & Economic Development Shane Davis, Director of Engineering Kathy Martin and Manager of Urban and Long-Range Planning Dennis Madsen for their presentations and answering residents’ questions.
City Dog Park Coming to District 5
Here is more good news for District 5: The City Council at the Jan. 22 meeting approved an engineering design services contract with Mullins LLC for a two-acre dog park and parking area on Cabela Drive. The design contract includes site surveying, fencing, sidewalks and a small parking area for what will be the City’s fifth dog park. I will be sure to keep you updated on the project as it progresses.
I met recently with residents at Rockhouse Landing's neighborhood meeting to answer questions and hear community concerns. These meetings provide a valuable opportunity to connect with constituents and address neighborhood-focused issues. Please contact the City Council office at 256-427-5011 or send an email if you are part of an HOA in District 5 and would like me to attend one of your meetings.
Presentation to 100 Black Women Huntsville Chapter
I enjoyed meeting with the National Coalition of 100 Black Women Greater Huntsville Chapter and presenting the organization with $5,000 from the District 5 Council Improvement Fund. These funds will support the organization’s mentorship programs, which are geared towards educating and empowering African American women and girls and advancing a more inclusive future for all. For the presentation, I was joined by Chapter President Robin Drake, 1st Vice President Dr. Laurie McCaulley and 2nd Vice President Dr. Elouise Bradsher.
District 5 Grows with Swancott Road Annexation
District 5 got a little bigger with the annexation of 648.44 acres on the east and west side of Swancott Road and south of Interstate 565. The annexation also includes the donation of 100 acres to Huntsville City Schools to build a P-8 school and potential expansion. The remaining land will be for residential and commercial development.
I was excited to support two development agreements at the Jan. 22 Council meeting that will create more than 450 new jobs and generate almost $200 million in capital investment. Blue Origin will expand its operations in Cummings Research Park and the Jetplex Industrial Park while SPX Enterprises is building a production facility on County Line Road.
I was honored to present a resolution at the Jan. 22 Council meeting to Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., an organization of dedicated community leaders with a steadfast commitment to serving the Huntsville community through a wide range of impactful initiatives. Phi Beta Sigma celebrated its 112th anniversary last month, a tremendous legacy of service and dedication. Congratulations!
Behind the Scenes: HFR Station 12
Sometimes, things don’t always go quite as expected. When Huntsville Fire & Rescue Capt. Dustin Weeks sat down for a profile of Station 12 on Wynn Drive, the alarm sounded at the station. Be sure to watch the video to see what happened next. Residents in District 5 are fortunate to be served by the professionals at Station 12.
