Where We Go from Here: A Statement from Gil Preuss on the Recent Mass Shootings
The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington joins the entire Jewish community in mourning the victims of recent mass shooting attacks in Gilroy, California; El Paso, Texas; and Dayton, Ohio. While we cannot eradicate hate, we can work to strengthen the forces that have sustained us as humans for millennia: common bonds, a sense of belonging, a strong moral compass, and genuine concern for others. At a time when the power of community and religious teachings are fading, we can be champions for both. We can build meaningful connections within our communities and draw on Jewish values to inform our quest to build a brighter future for ourselves and our country.

Tisha B'Av: From Bad Calendar Luck to Creative Jewish Renewal
On Tisha B’Av, the Ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av, when we commemorate Jewish national tragedies, Jewish tradition has condensed history to compound our national loss. But as dark and dense with tragedy as this day may be, it is not the Ninth of Av that defines who we are. Jewish memory will preserve these events, but the Jewish future will be built through the resulting resilience, creativity, hope, and wisdom accumulated over time and in response to these challenges.

Have you met Mark Jardina, Greater Washington's Regional Director of Security?
Mark Jardina, our community's Regional Director of Security, provides threat and vulnerability assessment and works to enhance security across 350 institutions across Greater Washington. Mark's position is the result of a unique partnership between Federation and Secure Community Network (SCN), the official security and safety organization of the American Jewish community. Just as Israel has an Iron Dome to protect its citizens from attack, SCN seeks to provide a "security shield" for America's Jewish community. We sat down with Mark to learn more about his role and the efforts to keep our community secure.
