2019 Environmental Leadership AwardsThe Environmental Leadership Awards were held on Wednesday, April 24 to recognize students, faculty, staff, and community members who demonstrate exceptional environmental leadership in their everyday lives The awards stem from the Committee on the Campus Environment, and are managed and funded by the Office of Sustainability as one of the annual Earth Month events.

Mayor Rogero Receives Award for her Environmental WorkThe Environmental Leadership Community Award was given to Mayor Madeline Rogero for her invaluable and lasting impact on the Knoxville community in numerous ways. Since day one of assuming her role as mayor, she has consistently placed an emphasis on sustainability projects and initiatives through economically feasible and practical methods.

Environmental Impact ReportAt the Environmental Leadership Awards on April 24, we presented our 2019 Environmental Impact Report. This report covers engagement, academics, energy and emissions, infrastructure, waste reduction, and some of our upcoming projects. | Shannon Campbell was voted by the Committee on the Campus Environment as the April Sustainability Champion. Shannon is a Senior Research Assistant for the Graduate School of Medicine at UT Medical Center, where he has been working since 1983. He is a champion of recycling efforts in his building where they did not always recycle everything they could.

Student Award Winners at the Leadership AwardsAt the Environmental Leadership Awards we recognized Kyra Jones, Emma Heins, Payton Myers, Jaden Hodges, and the business fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi for their exceptional environmental leadership at UT. Facilities Services and Parking & Transit Services Shine at the Leadership AwardsThe final award of the night was a new award presented by Chancellor Wayne T. Davis in its inaugural year – the Special Project Recognition Award. It was awarded to Facilities Services and Parking & Transit Services for their joint project in lighting upgrades in the parking garages on campus. Click the link below to read more about the award.

Bee Campus CertifiedOn Friday, April 26 we hosted our Bee Campus Celebration to honor our status as a Bee Campus Certified institution. What does it mean to be Bee Campus Certified? Read the seven requirements on the Bee Campus webpage.

Green Fee UpdatesThe Green Fee met for their last meeting of the academic year to review new proposals and the final budget from this fiscal year. Below is a summary of the meeting: - VSA: UT Organic Farm Internship Program was approved
- The $30,000 approved will fund five interns for this summer and next summer
- Goats on the Greenway proposal was approved
- Goats will help eliminate kudzu at two extremely overgrown locations on campus, total cost is $11,400
- Survey funding for the Grow Lab was approved to be completed in the fall semester
- A total cost of $1,000 will fund an online survey and in person focus groups
- Clarence Brown Theatre Backstage Bottle Filling Station was approved
- $2,500 will match funds from Be Well and the Theater to install the refill station

UT Recycling is working with Goodwill, Smokey’s Pantry and other area partners to reduce waste during the move-out period this week and next. Donate your unused or lightly used items in the labeled bins in your residence hall lobby rather than throwing them away! We accept clothing & bedding, non-perishable food, cleaning & hygiene products, furniture & appliances, and rugs & cinder blocks. Check out the complete list. UT Recycling is also hiring a garden manager to work in the UT Grow Lab! Gardening or farming experience is preferred, and you must be able to lift 40+ pounds at times and work in all weather conditions. Apply as a student worker, through the work study site, or email the Grow Lab Director Leah McCord at lmccord2@utk.edu for more information.

There are tons of places to check out water activities in Knoxville. Our local park, Ijams rents out paddleboards and kayaks!
