CROPS & SOILS

Tarspot update

Well, it was going to happen sometime soon, tar spot has been confirmed in two counties in Wisconsin. Both Lafayette and Rock counties were confirmed to have low levels of tar spot in several fields this week. The good news is that these finds are a month behind the initial confirmations in the state for the last two seasons. Most of our soybeans are already to R4 - R5 stage, which means a fungicide treatment for white mold at this point would not pay.

Waterhemp management plot tour

Join UW-Madison Weed Scientist Rodigo Werle and his research crew at the O’Brien Family Farm in Brooklyn, WI for the Waterhemp Management Plot Tour on August 10th at 4 pm and see some of the work his program has been doing to find solutions for this weed. Winter camelina and nitrogen loss/tie up trial

Cereal rye is VERY good at preventing nitrates in the soil from leaching, but it also holds onto that nitrogen for a long time as it decomposes. Winter camelina can be planted as late as cereal rye, but decomposes much quicker in the spring, releasing that nitrogen to the corn at time of crop need. We (Extension) are testing to see if winter camelina can reduce nitrate leaching similar to cereal rye and avoid the nitrogen tie up at planting. Interested? Building understanding of phosphorous stratification in soil health systems trial

Questions still exist on if cover crops, and their impact on soil biology, structure, and nutrient cycling, exacerbate or alleviate phosphorus stratification. Our program seeks to explore this relationship and hopes to answer “do long term no-till + cover crops sites have similar levels of stratified P as long term no-till sites? How uniformly does P stratification exist in no-till fields?” '

Extension's Ag and Water Quality Porgram is looking to collaborate with individual farmers or farmer groups on a soil test phosphorus survey. Individual participants will gain soil test results and an analysis on how nutrients are distributed within the top 6 inches of their fields. Groups will receive outreach and education on aggregated results and recommendations for minimizing water quality risks. Interested? Chelsea Zegler (zegler@wisc.edu) for more information.

Silage-specific corn hybrids for dairy cattle diets

Maximizing consumption of dry matter or increasing the energy density of the diet are key strategies for improving milk and milk protein yields. Upgrading the nutritional quality of corn silage through hybrid selection may benefit farmers via improvements in lactation performance.

Administering reproductive hormones to dairy cattle

Using proper injection techniques for animal health products, including reproductive hormones, helps ensure products work effectively. In addition, it is important to safely handle animals and health products to protect both farm workers and animals. Today, a cow’s primary purpose is milk production, but nearly all dairy cattle will have a “second career” producing meat. For this reason, Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) applies to dairy producers just as it does to beef producers. Whenever possible, injections should be placed in economically less important cuts of meat. In cattle, this means the side of the neck and avoiding the hindquarters.

Strategies to calf success in the first 24 hours of life

Calves go through 3 critical periods during their life. The first is around calving, which include the cow, calving environment and the whole area of colostrum feeding and management. The second period starts after 2 weeks of life. This period is when the most diarrhea and deaths of calves are registered and it is directly correlated with the results of the first period, meaning how good or bad the first period was. The third period is the weaning transition (2 weeks before and 2 weeks after full weaning) due to the new diet and grouping pen transition. In this occasion we are going to explain the first critical period and the strategies that you need when it comes to managing newborn calves in the first 24 hours of life.

Funding renewable energy and energy efficiency on your farm

Improving energy efficiency and generating renewable energy on the farm can significantly reduce energy expenses over the long term. Thanks to new and expanded funding, agricultural producers can now significantly reduce the upfront cost for clean energy projects on their farms.

Alternative Forage Research Study - The UW-Madison Division of Extension is looking for farms to participate in a research project involving alternative forages. Monetary compensation and summary of reports as incentives.

Pain Management Survey - The division of Extension seeks participants in a Pain Management Survey. This survey aims to collect information from farmers about their use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for various conditions/procedures in cattle.

Hay Market Demand & Price Report for the Upper Midwest - Hay auction data is collected on the first and third week of the month and posted by or before Tuesday. Prices quoted in this report are for “as fed” alfalfa hay.
