Camp Kesem at the George Washington University
A chapter of a national nonprofit that works in helping kids through and beyond a parent's cancer. Our mission is to form a shared community in the DMV area (we serve about 150 kids in the area!) so our kids have the resources to process this difficult part of life. The biggest way we do that is by having a summer camp for our kids.
It's a one-week sleepaway camp at a site in Maryland. Camp will run from August 10-16 this summer. College students volunteer as counselors during the week to have fun and build that community with our campers. It's honestly the best week of the year, Camp Kesem is a fun space where kids are allowed and encouraged to be kids. We don't focus on grief at all, we are there to have summer camp and play.
Camp serves kids from ages 6 to 18, with different activities for different age groups. As a counselor you're there to facilitate and lead these activities as well as listen to your campers' needs. Kesem builds a really beautiful community and we always feel so lucky to be around fellow Kesem-ers.
We, the GW volunteer team, want to extend the invitation to be a part of the Kesem magic this summer. The application process is pretty simple, we ask that anyone who's interested fill out this Google Form, which also has the directions to filling out the official Kesem application (on a website called Kesem Force). From there, we will reach out to applicants about scheduling an interview. If selected, volunteer counselors must attend training and complete a few simple online modules.
