SEPTEMBER 2020

The September/October issue of The Naturalist newsletter is online. Read now »

Dear Friend,

We hope you will enjoy the new look of our monthly e-news, now called The Owl Post (we couldn't miss a chance to show off Percy!) Here are the latest happenings at Houston Audubon.

Lights Out for Birds!

Though it may still feel like summer, fall migration is officially upon us! Millions of birds will be flying overhead as they make their way to their wintering grounds. Light pollution can disorient migrating birds, causing injury and harm, especially to young birds making their first trip south. We have a responsibility to make this incredible journey easier for our birds, and you can help by turning your exterior lights out at night.

High Island and Bolivar Flats

Our coastal sanctuaries were predicted to be in Hurricane Laura’s path, so conservation staff prepared the sanctuaries and facilities for the storm before evacuating. Laura tracked more to the east, which put even our most easterly sanctuaries outside of tropical force winds. We experienced no damage from the storm, but it was good practice to prepare for a major hurricane. We’re just halfway through hurricane season so we will remain vigilant as we continue maintaining and improving wildlife habitat and public access to nature.
Fall migratory birds are starting to visit Bolivar Flats!
If you're planning on visiting High Island, watch out for the spiders!  Read our latest blog post »
High Island sanctuaries are open daily from 7 AM to 7 PM.
