On Saturday night St. Louis’ Matt F Basler is taking the stage at The Fungeon. I fired off a few questions to him this week and his answers did not disappoint…
Local Radar: How did you find yourself playing in Springfield?
Matt F Basler: One day you just wake up and realize, “I have to play in Springfield.” You can’t fight it. You can’t ignore it.
LR: I know you played at Moon City Pub previously. How did you get connected to The Fungeon?
MFB: I had played at a brewery, and when I asked them about playing there again, they told me they aren’t going to have bands like mine anymore. They told me I should check out The Fungeon, said maybe that’s a little more “my speed.” And you know what? They were right.
LR: How would you describe your music?
MFB: Sometimes bands will say, “you can’t define our music, we transcend genres!” They say that like it’s the best thing in the world. But I have rock records, and a country record, and a synth record that is all covers of modern ‘bro country’ music…it’s a nightmare. I wish I could easily describe my music. I think the shows are MOSTLY rock music.
LR: What’s the makeup of your band?
MFB: Right now, it’s a four-piece. Tomorrow? Who could say? Bands are like liquid and they just spill out everywhere and sometimes parts of it dry up, but you can wet the sponge again. I really like playing with different fluids.
LR: Which Winter Olympic sport do you think you would most excel at?
MFB: I can’t imagine there is a sport in any type of weather that I would excel at. I think I am equally poorly suited for all of them. I hate the cold, so maybe the one where you get to wear the biggest coat? Is there a winter sport where you are bundled? Snowboarding looks like fun and like if you fell it could potentially hurt less than skateboarding. I briefly tried to skateboard, but one time the skateboard shot out from under me while I was just standing still and that was the end of that. I’m not cut out for things where you can get hurt standing still.
So, check out Waste of Time, come see what Matt IS cut out for tomorrow night at The Fungeon, and we’ll see you next week!
