Point-In-Time Count Wraps Up

HRAC recently completed the regional Point-In-Time Count of people experiencing homelessness in Washington, Multnomah, and Clackamas counties. This was the first time that all three counties have used a coordinated approach and shared methodology for the federally-mandated census. The Pount-In-Time Count received extensive media coverage (see news mentions below). Full results will be released later in spring.

HRAC Receives National Academies of Sciences Grant

HRAC recently received a $350,000 grant from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine through the National Cooperative Highway Research Program. This grant will fund research on strategies for addressing encampments of people experiencing houselessness on state departments of transportation rights-of-way. UCLA's Institute of Transportation Studies partnered on the grant proposal and will serve as a subcontractor to assist with the research.

"The Gap" Report Illustrates Oregon's Housing Shortage

The 2023 release of "The Gap: A Shortage of Affordable Homes" from the National Low-Income Housing Coalition shows that there are only 23 available and affordable rentals for every 100 extremely-low-income renter households in Oregon, and that 80% of those households are severely cost burdened (paying more than 50% of their income in rent). Housing availability and affordability are major drivers of homelessness both in Oregon and across the nation.
