5 ways PARCC testing will be different this year
By Adam Clark The Star-Ledger
from NJ.com March 28, 2016
It's almost time for New Jersey students to take their annual state exams again.
While the standardized tests will be the same the — the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) exams — some aspects of the testing experience have changed.
Here are five ways PARCC testing will be different in 2016:
1. One testing window (note: see article below for Elysian’s testing schedule)
In the first year of PARCC testing the exams were administered in two separate testing windows, one throughout March and a second during late April and May.
So many days spent under a testing schedule took a toll on some schools and drew sharp criticism from parents and teachers.
This year, all exam sections will be given in a single testing window, with the exception of high school tests for students in block scheduling.
Elementary school testing can take place between April 4 and May 13. High school testing is allowed beginning April 11 and must end by May 20. Students in block scheduling will test between April 25 and June 3
Education Commissioner David Hespe has predicted that many schools will complete PARCC testing in just two weeks.
2. Shorter testing time
Along with the reduction of testing days for schools, students should spend fewer hours overall taking the math and English exams.
Allotted testing time — roughly 10-11 hours in 2015 depending on a student's grade level — will be shorter by about 90 minutes overall, 60 minutes fewer in math and 30 minutes fewer in English.
3. Fewer test sections
In further streamlining the test administration, the PARCC states decided to cut some questions and consolidate test sections.
Students will take one, two or three fewer test sections depending on their grade. However, the sections they do take will be longer than last year.
4. Some 11th graders exempt
Tens of thousands of high school juniors sat out of PARCC in New Jersey last year, and some students in the Class of 2017 have another reason to skip the English test in 2016.
The state Department of Education has decided to excuse juniors who take Advanced Placement English tests or International Baccalaureate English tests in 11th grade from taking the PARCC English test for juniors.
State officials are comfortable that they can gauge the college and career readiness of those students without the PARCC exam, Hespe said.
5. Faster results
PARCC testing finished in May last year but students didn't get their results until around December, a seven-month delay
Critics of PARCC testing questioned how valuable the results could be after a student was already midway through the next school year.
This year, PARCC scores are expected to be returned more quickly. Hespe said the results should out by "early summer."

ON SATURDAY, APRIL 30, Hoboken’s Mile Square Theatre will host three performances of  “Circus Minimus: One-Man Circus-In-a-Suitcase” to benefit Elysian Charter School, Hoboken Charter School, Hoboken Dual Language Charter School (HoLa) and the theatre’s own education scholarship fund.
SO WHAT IS “CIRCUS MINIMUS: ONE-MAN CIRCUS-IN-A-SUITCASE”?
“From the suitcase of the multi-talented Kevin O’Keefe, an entire circus emerges: tent, band, lights, and a collection of comedic circus characters he inhabits. Included are a boisterous ringmaster, officious usher, glamorous “magician to the stars,” and even an entire family of juggling acrobats. However, the most important performers emerge from the audience. Each performance becomes a dialogue between the characters and the audience—a light-hearted collaboration.”
3 PERFORMANCES – ONE DAY: On Saturday, April 30 only, you can catch the show at 11 am, 2 pm or 5 pm.
TO PURCHASE TICKETS:   $40 Adults • $20 Kids
Elysian will receive half of each ticket sold using the school code “ECS.” Go to the url below and at checkout, enter school code “ECS” in the discount code field in order for Elysian to receive its designated funds.

ELYSIAN RUGBY CLUB
The Elementary (grades 4-5) and Middle School (grades 6-8) Elysian Rugby teams are accepting registration forms for the spring 2016 season.  Registration is open to all Elysian students in grades 4-8.  Coach John Rutledge will once again be leading the Club!
For the spring season we are only able to field 12 players for each team.  Therefore, we’ll hold a one-day tryout on Tuesday, April 12th at 1600 Park from 3:00-3:45pm to determine the 12 players for each team.  In order to be a part of one of the teams, you must first and foremost demonstrate good sportsmanship and be a team-oriented player.  In addition, you must be able to play rugby at a competitive level.
The Club will meet for weekly practice on Tuesdays from 3:00-3:45pm at 1600 Park.  The first practice will be Tuesday, April 19th and run the following dates (weather permitting) – 4/19, 4/26, 5/3, 5/10, 5/17, 5/24, 5/31 and 6/7.  Please have students dress appropriately for outdoor practices and bring a water bottle.  With the field so close, I am able to walk the Club members to practice.

Information About Class Trips/ORGS ONLINE
Effective immediately, class trips that incur a fee of $25 or less can only be paid for BY CASH OR CHECK (payable to Elysian Charter School).  We will NOT be posting trips with fees of $25.00 or under on ORGS ONLINE any longer.   Many of you have expressed concern over the $4.00 surcharge when paying for trips online, so this will no longer be a factor when paying for those less costly trips.  It will also make it easier for teachers to track trip payments and be less of a burden on parents to remember to log on to pay.  When returning a permission slip to your child's teacher, please remember to attach the cash or check payment. Thank you.
