Dear students,
I love philosophy and one of my biggest goals as a teacher is to help you develop a similar love. My hope is that this will happen for you, perhaps even during your first semester here. But I recently thought, "Why wait?" Why not try to spark your interest in philosophy even before you arrive on campus?
With this in mind, I approached Mr. Cook with the idea of hosting a short, three-week online philosophical "class" this summer, meeting once a week for one hour. Mr. Cook agreed, thinking many of you might be interested, and I certainly hope you are!
Here's the plan:
Each week, I would ask you to read a short text from Thomas Aquinas, and then we will discuss it during an online Zoom meeting. I've chosen texts that explore the reasons behind three of the Commandments (specifically, the two overarching Commandments of "love God" and "love thy neighbor" and the Third Commandment, "Keep Holy the Sabbath"):
- Week 1: We will discuss "Love God."
-
Week 2: We will discuss "Love Thy Neighbor."
- Week 3: We will conclude with a discussion of "Keep Holy the Sabbath."
There's an almost limitless number of texts I could have chosen, but I believe you'll enjoy reading Thomas's profound thoughts on these foundational principles.
Our first discussion is scheduled for next Wednesday, June 11 starting at 8:00 pm EDT. If you decide to join us, please do your best to complete the reading beforehand (links for the first two readings are above) so that we can have a lively discussion rather than a lecture!
I look forward to meeting some of you next Wednesday night.
