“The Bible has always been for me a meeting place with God.” Jack MacGorman, a professor at my seminary arrested me with those words. This had been my experience as a young person. No one had ever articulated it for me so clearly. The scriptures not only teach me about God, but God himself teaches me in the scriptures.
At the end of our fourth chapter in the book of Hebrews, the writer points us back to two foundational truths. First, God has a word for us. He is speaking to us. His word is inescapable. It not only shows us who we are in God’s eyes, but God’s word also calls us to account. This word from God to us is revealed in the scriptures. This means I can’t just read the Bible disinterestedly. It has something to say to me, every time. As Charles Spurgeon put it, "Nobody ever outgrows Scripture. The Book widens and deepens with our years."
Not only does God speak to us, but we can speak to God. Jesus, our great High Priest, suffered temptations as we do, yet he did not sin. His intercession for us with the Father invites us to come boldly before God’s throne of grace to find his mercy and grace when we are in need. The writer of Hebrews invites us to come back to the basics. Listen for God’s word and answer his call. Talk to God with confidence that he hears. Trust God to give you everything you need today to live a godly life.
