Peter Marshall, the chaplain of the U. S. Senate spoke of his calling as a tap on the shoulder. When God called him he answered. Do you know anyone who has found their calling? Our youngest passionately loves teaching kids with special needs. Serving in this ministry at Tallowood gave her an opportunity to find, develop and use that gift.
Paul uses the word call or calling three times in these verses. He first heard God calling him on the road to Damascus. Blinded and arrested by the light, he changed directions that day and followed God’s will. Later, when he left Athens, Paul made his way to Corinth and there proclaimed Christ and him crucified. Those who trusted in Christ were washed and called to be his holy people. Those who call on Jesus as Lord are called to become holy. The God who saves us also sanctifies us and sends us out to serve.
What is your calling? The Olympic runner and preacher, Eric Liddell ran fast and then preached the truth to the people in China. When I was young, I heard pastors speak about people who were called to ministry. This left the false impression that some Christ are called to minister and others are not. A friend at Tallowood helped me with this years ago when he said, “Pastor, we are all in ministry. We just fund it in different ways.” My work is to equip God’s people to do the work of ministry to which he has called you. So today if you feel a tap on the shoulder or a tug in your heart . . . today if you hear his voice do not harden your heart. Answer his call. You will be glad you did.
