How does God sound? Can you imagine God’s voice? Is he a bass or a tenor? Different actors like George Burns and Morgan Freeman have tried to portray it through the years. Does God’s voice sound like thunder or like a tornado? Is it as Elijah experienced it, to be heard in the sound of a gentle whisper? Would we recognize God’s voice if he spoke to us today?
The writer of Hebrews tells us that God speaks. In earlier times, God spoke through the voices of prophets like Elijah, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel. They knew he was talking to them and they recorded his words. In these last days, God has spoken to us through Jesus. Who is Jesus to speak for the Father? Jesus is the heir of all things, the creator of the universe, the radiance of God’s glory, the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. Now he is seated at the right hand of the Father.
Once, before Jesus was crucified, his Father spoke affirming his words, saying,” I have glorified my name and I will glorify it again.” All the bystanders heard that day was a sound like thunder. On this side of heaven, we may never hear God’s audible voice. But I am convinced that he is speaking to us today. What does God’s voice sound like? Jesus. As we sing, “He speaks and the sound of his voice is so sweet the birds hush their singing.” Listen to his voice today. If God tells you to do something, by all means, do it!
