Halloween Fun

When witches go riding and black cats are seen, the moon laughs and whispers: '''Tis near Halloween."  We have a fun week of Halloween activities planned for all of our Dragons. More details will be sent out shortly regarding our Jack O' Lantern Jubilee. Here is a sneak peek:
Monday, October 26: Pumpkin Carving Contest
Families will do this at home all week and submit their photos to our communications office with prizes awarded for "most school spirit", "spookiest," and "silliest."  Winners will be announced on Halloween.
Tuesday, October 27: Spirited Story
Join Mr. Gregg for Halloween tales offered virtually during the morning and afternoon cohorts.
Wednesday, October 28: DRAGON Suprise
Our Dragon mascot will be visiting all classrooms with a small special surprise.
Thursday, October 29: Spooky Carpool Parade
Come to carpool dropoff with your car all decked out for Halloween! Which family will have the most Halloween spirit?
Friday, October 30: Pumpkins, Parade, and Pageantry
In keeping with St M traditions, Kindergarten will participate in an outdoor costume parade and an on-campus pumpkin patch visit on our trails (weather permitting). Kindergarten parents are invited to attend. Details will be shared later this week.
We also invite all of our K-8 students and faculty to come dressed in costumes on October 30. So as not to intimidate our youngest Dragons, we ask that costumes not be scary. Also no blood or weapon props, nor costume masks, please. Students should wear costumes that they can wear for the whole day. Students may also wear Halloween colors.

Faculty News

St. Michael's is pleased to welcome two new faculty members:
We are pleased to announce that Linnea Harding-Scudder will be joining our faculty as a Middle School math teacher, assuming the responsibilities of Mrs. Guyer’s seventh grade algebra and sixth grade math classes, starting on October 19. Ms. Harding-Scudder comes to St M with a background in math and computer science tutoring, as well as with additional educational experience in teaching English to native Spanish-speaking students. She holds a degree in Business Administration from the University of Mary Washington.
Joining us in Kindergarten as assistant to Mrs. Adams and Mrs. Rowe is Anne Maclin Ferrell. Anne Maclin has a long history with St. Michael's. She is a proud member of the St M Class of 2012,  went on to Trinity Episcopal School and this past spring graduated from James Madison University. Along with a decade of babysitting experience and as a vacation bible school support teacher, Anne taught dance at Kinetic Kids in Harrisonburg, and at Encore Performing Arts Studio in Chester, Virginia. We are so happy to welcome her back to St. Michael's!

Thank you in advance for warmly welcoming Ms. Harding-Scudder and Ms. Ferrell to our Dragon community.

Who do I contact....?

BOO to the FLU!

Both flu and COVID-19 may be spreading this fall, so it’s more important than ever to get an annual flu vaccine. The best time to get vaccinated is before flu viruses start to spread—typically by the end of October. While flu shots are a family decision, if we can reduce the incidents of flu this year, we can potentially reduce the need for quarantine and COVID testing. Say "boo to the flu" and get a flu vaccine by Halloween.   - Nurse Maben

SMPA Spotlight

The mission of the St. Michael's Parents' Association (SMPA) is to promote the health and safety of our children and to build closer relationships between our families, faculty, and staff. In order to further those goals, the SMPA officers will be providing short articles in the St. Michael's Weekly E-News with information we would like to share with the community. In our first edition, we simply want to introduce ourselves to you. You are always welcome to reach out to us with your ideas, questions, or concerns.
SMPA President: My name is Caroline Peters, and I have a fourth grader, Charlie, at St. Michael's. I work as a closing attorney at a local mortgage company, I fancy myself a very slow long-distance runner, and I love nothing more than to curl up with a good book. My husband, Todd, and I absolutely love being part of the St. Michael's community and are so grateful to the wonderful teachers and administrators who have helped our son blossom.
SMPA Vice President: My name is Lauren Jones. My husband, Charlie, and I are the proud parents of fourth grader, Smith. I work at an Interior Design firm here in Richmond and enjoy cooking, spending time with my family, and being in the mountains as much as possible. I am happy to be part of the SMPA serving this fantastic school with dedicated teachers, staff, and volunteers. I look forward to a great year!
SMPA Treasurer: I am half of the parenting team for a fifth grader, Haydn, a third grader, Swimley, and a kindergartener, Beatrice. I also serve as the yearbook editor for each of my kids' grades. I have worked in environmental consulting all of my career and my teams support clients in regulatory and/or compliance matters. Luckily, my business translates nicely to working from home, and honestly it's been fun having the crew of kids "at the office." My wife, Katie, runs her own marketing communications business from the house as well, and while she enjoys our company, she has had to get used to the constant interruptions by her family officemates. Katie also serves as the lead coach for Girls on the Run and had a blast bringing that program to St. Michael's in 2019. We are proud members of the White Team as well! Go White!! We are incredibly thankful to the staff and teachers for their tireless dedication to our kids. We are lucky to be part of such a caring and loving community.
SMPA Secretary: My name is Molly Dey and my husband, Brad, and I have two daughters, Maggie (first grade) and Elizabeth (fourth grade) at St. Michael's.  We live in the city and enjoy walks, bike rides, and playing tennis.  I enjoy volunteering for various organizations in our community and at our school.  My family just loves our sweet school and the St M community and we have so much gratitude for all the wonderful teachers and staff.
We are so sorry that circumstances prevent us from meeting you all in person right now, but we look forward to communicating with you throughout the school year!
Caroline, Lauren, Bernly, and Molly
