Concord's Independent Bookstore Since 1898

Changing our hours!

We're going to be here an extra hour in the afternoons, to accommodate folks who just can't make it before 4 PM. Our new hours are:
  • Monday: appointments only, 10-4, for people over 60 or who have underlying medical conditions
  • Tuesday-Saturday: open to the public, 10-5
  • Sunday: closed for now

Our front tables

It's a great week for new releases, with new books by Stephenie Meyer, Jeffrey Toobin, Isabel Wilkerson, and many others. Check them out by clicking the link above.

Virtual events this week and next

We aren't encouraging large groups to gather. But it's still our mission to connect readers with writers, and the way we're doing that now is through online events. You can ask questions and otherwise interact with the authors during some online events, and you can buy signed books through our website or during the ticketing process.   Click the images below for more info and for ways to join the events online.  Check our events schedule often to learn about new virtual events coming up.
We are moving many of our online events to Eventbrite, so they are easier for you to find and for us to manage.  To register for the Zoom event, click the "tickets" button.
Our upcoming events are the surefire antidote to Zoom weariness. They are that good and that important. Click on the images below for information and for access to the events.

Pretty good timing on that event with author Eric Jay Dolin, whose new book is a history of America's hurricanes!   Batten down the hatches and join us online.
We're very much looking forward to our Zoom event with Bishop Rob Hirschfeld for his new book, With Sighs Too Deep for Words: Grace and Depression.
Marek Bennett, the author of The Civil War Diary of Freeman Colby, joins us on August 11 to present his new book. Fans of graphic novels, history, and local talent should join us!

We're open

As a reminder, here are the rules.
The science hasn't changed--it's still best to stay at home, wear masks, wash hands, and maintain appropriate distance from others, until vaccines and treatments are developed. So Gibson's will continue to encourage you to shop from home on our website. We still have our 99-cent shipping program, for orders over $20, and also have curbside pick-up, Monday-Saturday
But we are now open to the public -- hours are 10-5, Tues.-Sat.
  • Everyone must wear a mask while in the bookstore at all times. No exceptions.
  • Social distancing (min. 6 feet) will be encouraged and enforced throughout
  • A maximum of 25 customers can be in the bookstore at any one time
  • Our comfy chairs and desks will be out of service for now
  • We'll be closed entirely on Sundays. Staff will be in the bookstore filling online orders and doing curbside pickups on Mondays. The store will be open on Mondays by appointment only, for customers who are 60 or older, or who are at-risk to the virus due to underlying medical conditions.
  • Author events, book clubs, etc. will be all online/virtual for the foreseeable future
Let's all stay safe and maintain these common-sense protocols from the CDC and the State, so we don't have to close again because cases have spiked.

Past event recordings

Here's a good bookmark to remember. Many of our past virtual events are preserved online, so you can view them at your convenience. Right now we have our event R.A. Salvatore and Terry Brooks archived there, along with Rage Baking authors Kathy Gunst and Katherine Alford's discussion, an interview with Enter the Aardvark author Jessica Anthony, and Michael's conversation with John Grisham. We've added our events with Erin Bowman , Colin Woodard, and S.A. Chakraborty. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to learn about more virtual events coming up and archived online.

Other ways we're keeping in touch online

Our podcast, The Laydown, continues! Check out recent episodes here. We've also begun a new program called Brunch with a Bookseller. Gibson's booksellers will take part in unscripted Zoom sessions talking about what's new, what's hot, and what's just interesting in the world of books, with video available on our Facebook page. These will usually be hosted on our Facebook page around 10 AM every Thursday.

Anti-Racist texts

So many people have bought so many anti-racist books in the past two months. It gives one hope to see this happening, even though the reasons they were suddenly buying them (the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and so many others) were awful and depressing.  We hope these books are being read and discussed and that what follows is meaningful anti-racist action.  I keep going back to this article, the truth of which is hard to deny--and hoping things are different this time. There's always more to read. Don't stop at White Fragility and Ibram X. Kendi, as important as those works are. Here is our ever-growing list of anti-racist books.
Just out this week: the magisterial Caste, by Pulitzer Prize winner Isabel Wilkerson.

Everyone be well!

Thanks for reading this far. We are so grateful for your support.
