August Featured Park: Crater Lake National Park

The natural wonder that is Crater Lake attracts visitors from around the world and is one of the most recognizable natural places in Oregon. It is a place Oregonians feel connected to, whether or not they have visited. Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States and is fed only by rain and snow that collects in this natural caldera formed after the eruption of Mount Mazama. Visit here once and you will remember it for the rest of your life.

Early Fall is a great time to visit the park. This time of year, the weather is mild, the skies are sunny, and the roads are clear. Even though Crater Lake is open year-round, many of the access roads close as early as October due to snow and remain closed through Spring. Nearby campgrounds for reservation include Lost Creek campground, Farewell Bend campground, and Union Creek campground, all of which are managed by Umpqua National Forest and can be reserved on recreation.gov.

Upcoming Crater Lake activities and events

September 10th and 17th 2022 – Ride the Rim: The Crater Lake Rim Road will be closed to vehicles on these days for people to enjoy the 33-mile trek. Mostly aimed at bicyclists, the event also welcomes hikers and runners on these days.

September 24th – National Public Lands Day: Get in to Crater Lake for free on this fee-free day for National Parks.

Most days– Ranger hikes and programs: Guided hikes, stargazing sessions, and Junior Ranger talks are always happening (June to mid-September)

Ticket2Ride Program Grants for Fall Field Trips

Attention all teachers! School is starting soon and if your planning involves a fall field trip, Ticket2Ride might be able to help. Our program funds up to $500 for transportation costs for field trips by 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classes from Title One Schools. Grant money is available now and will be awarded this September for qualified trips.

Try Day-Hiking These Epic Backpacking Trails in Oregon

For many outdoor adventurers, the idea of a long-distance backpacking trip is a dream, a goal, or bucket-list item. Here in Oregon we are fortunate to have two incredible and well-known backpacking trails – and they are more accessible than you might imagine.

Both the Oregon Coast Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail have sections that lend themselves to shorter hikes, including day hikes and overnight trips. In addition to the many books available, there is a lot of information about both of these trails online, including maps, area status updates, and trail conditions.

Going out for a shorter hike is a great way to become familiar with parts of the trail and find out if a longer trip is something you’d enjoy. Here are a few areas where you can hike portions of these popular trails. Recreation passes may be required in some areas, and depending on how long you plan to stay, so be sure to check requirements before you head out. Read the full article>>
