Project of the year positively impacts local community

In the current issue of Tennessee Public Works magazine, Lebanon Mayor Bernie Ash talks about the benefits the city of Lebanon has realized from launching the award-winning Lebanon Gasification Initiative.
Turning Trash Into Fuel
"Before construction was finished on the gasification plant in Lebanon, over 16 million pounds of wood waste, tires and treated sewage went to the land fill annually. Now, the gasification plant turns that waste into power to meet a third of the energy needs for the city’s wastewater treatment plant, the single largest consumer of electricity in Lebanon." Writing for The Appalachian Voice, Kevin Ridder gets into the science of how waste becomes energy.
Waste-to-energy plant provides renewable energy source

Industrial Water & Wastes Digest presents a brief case study on the Lebanon Gasification Plant in its coverage of the Top Water & Wastewater Projects of 2017. As Lebanon copes with a 20 percent population growth in six years, initiatives like this one are critical to smart growth.
