FaithAction News - December 2014

Last week, all current and former FaithAction staff, board members and volunteers held a toast at our Multicultural Thanksgiving Celebration - a toast to relief (see more great pictures from the packed celebration)!  After years of inaction from Congress on meaningful immigration reform, President Obama announced that he would take executive action, like many presidents before him, that would provide immigration relief to nearly 5 million hard working, family and faith oriented immigrants.
This means that thousands of "mixed status" immigrant families we've had the priviliege to serve, work with and learn from over the past 18 years will be safe from detention and deportation for up to 3 years.  It means that their US citizen children will be able to breathe easier, because mom and dad will be there when they get home from school, and eligible parents will now be able to work and more fully participate in the life of our community.
We are happy for these friends and neighbors, even though the relief is temporary and limited, yet there are 7 million other law abiding immigrants who will not qualify for this policy; so we made a promise as well - a promise to work even harder to move our government forward to pass fair and humane immigration reform that creates legal status for ALL of our deserving immigrant friends.
In the meantime, we will continue to serve and work alongside our newest immigrant neighbors, educate our larger citizen community on the gifts and challenges of immigration, and bring these two groups together so they can grow in their undestanding, trust and cooperation with one another - turning strangers into neighbors.
For more reflections on immigration relief, please read a reflection from Executive Director, Rev. David Fraccaro, and check out the Fox news feature on FaithAction's own Dulce Ortiz and family.
