University hosts regional conference on housing and urban development
UChicago Urban event kicks off U.S. discussions ahead of U.N. summit
On March 31, the University of Chicago welcomed leading policy experts, urban practitioners, scholars, representatives of the philanthropic sector, and civil society to campus, to examine the ways in which Midwestern cities have tackled the challenges of urbanization over the last 20 years.

More than 250 people attended the daylong conference, "Learning from the City.” It was the first event sponsored by UChicago Urban, the new initiative to capture and amplify the University’s array of urban research, practice and engagement activities. It was also the first of five national convenings to prepare for this fall’s U.N. Habitat III global summit in Quito, Ecuador.

Research highlights racial and ethnic disparity in college graduation rates
For the last three years, Associate Professor Micere Keels and her colleagues at the EdTalk Project have been tracking more than 500 Black and Latino students across their first three years of college. Based on research showing the importance of where students enroll in determining the likelihood they will graduate, the EdTalk Project has developed an up-to-date listing of college graduation at more than 1,800 colleges and universities. The companion report, Beyond Enrollment Rates: The Gaping Disparity in Where Black, Latino and White Students Enroll, presents the racial and ethnic disparity in the historical graduation rates of the colleges where the last two freshman cohorts enrolled.

Partner Spotlight: University Community Service Center Alternative Spring Break
This year, for the first time, the University of Chicago provided students with an organized opportunity to spend their week-long Spring Break giving back to the community. The University Community Service Center (UCSC) Alternative Spring Break program took 13 undergraduates and two graduate students to live at Hope Works Community Development, an affiliate of Living Hope Church, in Woodlawn. The students helped to organize a new thrift store by building shelves and organizing donations. They also tutored students in the church's after-school program.
