Welcome Back! Smith Is Open!
The flexible fall term at Portland State University promises different experiences for different folks. For those who will be on campus, Smith Memorial Student Union will be open weekdays beginning Sept. 28 to provide study space, meeting rooms (by reservation), the Info Hub and the University Market.

Smith Building Hours (fall term): 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday

To help keep students, employees and the community safe, the building — like all campus facilities operating under the University's Covid-19 outbreak guidelines — will be accessible only to the campus community with a PSU ID needed to enter.

Swipe your PSU ID to enter Smith
PSU ID access only: You need your PSU ID to access Smith, even during regular building hours. Swipe your card at the Cramer Hall side door or the skybridges on the third floor. Those entrances also provide ADA access. Look for more Smith entrances to have electronic access as fall term progresses.
New lighting on ground floor of Smith
LIGHTING UP THE GROUND FLOOR: An upgrade of the lights in the ground floor central corridor (top) makes Smith a little brighter and easier to navigate starting this fall. The new system uses LEDs that will help save electricity and utility costs as well.

Study Spaces Reconfigured for Fall

Study lounges and areas throughout Smith have fewer chairs and revised layouts to provide proper distancing during Covid-19 response phases. Please:
  • Wear face covering at all times — even betweens sips and bites
  • Keep proper physical distance (6 feet is recommended) from others who are studying
  • Do not move furniture
  • Honor capacity signage.
Limits set by the University and state should be enforced for the safety of all.
University Market Open M-F
During fall term, the University Market on the ground floor of Smith is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday, starting Sept. 28.
The Market has been outfitted for physical distancing, frequent cleaning and protection during transactions. Come by, grab a coffee or drink, check out the snacks and look for grab-and-go breakfast and lunch options during the term
PSU masks on sale first week of term five dollars
MARKET SPECIAL: From Sept. 28 to Oct. 2, get a cotton or polyester PSU face mask for only $5 at the University Market in Smith. Limit one mask while supplies last.

Meeting Space Available at Smith

Working within the state, county and University’s public health guidelines, meeting and tabling space are available at Smith for PSU groups and departments. External groups and events are not allowed at this time. Extra care with scheduling will allow more time for cleaning and help insure the safety of attendees. Yes, masks are required and physical distancing will be factored in.

If your department or group needs a space to hold a staff meeting, a recognition ceremony or small event and doesn’t have enough square footage  due to physical distancing, you can submit a request to the Events Inquiry Form or contact the Campus Events & Student Union office for more information on campus meeting spaces.
Questions? Info Hub Is Open
Is there life on Venus? We have no idea, but if you have campus questions, the Info Hub in the Broadway lobby of Smith will be open this term. PSU employees can pick up masks and students will find disposable masks when needed. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Also open Friday, Oct. 2.
Employees: For Access Outside Building Hours
If you, or your staff, need access to your space and have 24-hour PSU ID access you can still enter the building at an electronic access control door. For questions about staff who need 24/7 access, please contact skohn@pdx.edu.

Public Health Guidelines In Smith
During fall term, Smith will be following University, state and county Covid-19 outbreak guidelines. These are designed to help reduce the spread of the disease, particularly within the campus community.
  • Follow all University guidelines on public health and safety.
  • Face coverings are required throughout Smith. The only exception is when a person is alone in a closed office with proper physical distancing.
  • Maintain at least 6 feet for proper physical distancing.
  • Frequent cleanings will occur throughout the day and overnight.
  • Elevators: One person at a time please. Yield to those with mobility impairments.
  • All rooms and public spaces will have reduced capacities. At this time, gatherings should have no more than 25 people in a room with adequate space to allow 6 feet between each person.
  • We remind you to wash hands throughly and frequently.
  • If you are coughing, have a fever, suspect you were exposed to the coronovirus or feel sick, please stay home.
