Genesis 27:20-29
20 Isaac asked his son, “How did you find it so quickly, my son?”
“The Lord your God gave me success,” he replied.
21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Come near so I can touch you, my son, to know whether you really are my son Esau or not.”
22 Jacob went close to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” 23 He did not recognize him, for his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau; so he proceeded to bless him. 24 “Are you really my son Esau?” he asked.
“I am,” he replied.
25 Then he said, “My son, bring me some of your game to eat, so that I may give you my blessing.”
Jacob brought it to him and he ate; and he brought some wine and he drank. 26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come here, my son, and kiss me.”
27 So he went to him and kissed him. When Isaac caught the smell of his clothes, he blessed him and said,
“Ah, the smell of my son
is like the smell of a field
    that the Lord has blessed.
28 May God give you heaven’s dew
    and earth’s richness—
an abundance of grain and new wine.
29 May nations serve you
and peoples bow down to you.
Be lord over your brothers,
and may the sons of your mother bow down to you.
May those who curse you be cursed
and those who bless you be blessed.”

New International Version (NIV)
What would you do to receive the blessing of your parents?  I have known friends who lived their whole lives longing for but never receiving their parents' blessing.  This wound has left a scar.
In the ancient world, the law of primogeniture promised birthright and blessing to the firstborn son.  God regularly flips this rule on its head.  So, Jacob was promised primacy over his older brother before he was born.  With a name that meant grasper, he took his brother's birthright and blessing by hook and by crook with the approval of their mother Rebekah.
Favoritism ran in the family.  Rebekah and Jacob colluded to steal Esau's blessing. Given the chance to tell the truth, Jacob lied and invoked the name of the Lord in his trickery.  He literally stopped at nothing to take what God had already promised him.
In the life of faith, the end does not justify the means.  Further, God is not a means to the end of our self-exaltation.  True, Jacob has God's blessing.  But his choices created a rift with his brother that took years to repair.
How can we work to stop the plague of favoritism in our families?  Let's ask the Lord to help us!
Pray with me:
Father, we thank you that all your promises to us are fulfilled in and guaranteed by Jesus.  Help us to trust you.  Deliver us from the methods and machinations of the world and its cunning ways.  Free our families from favoritism.  Start with us we pray. In Jesus' name.  Amen.
Our 2023 Every Day with Jesus readings are taken from Robert Murray M'Cheyne's Bible Reading Calendar. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
Please join us in reading through the scriptures again this year.  We will read the New Testament twice and the Old Testament once this year. M'Cheyne once said, “A man is who he is on his knees, and nothing more.”  Would you pray with me that God will make his word live to us this year?  Let’s not just get through the Bible.  Let it get through to us!

Joyfully,
Duane
