In-Person Registration Requirements for International Students
Since the spring of 2020, the US government has allowed for certain exemptions from the in-person registration requirement for some international students. These exemptions have allowed for students who were present in the United States and continuously pursuing their studies since March of 2020 to fully enroll in online courses (with the permission of their academic programs) and still maintain their legal status in the United States.
We anticipate that these exemptions will no longer be in place for the 2023-2024 academic year, therefore we request that you keep this information in mind in preparation for the Fall 2023 registration period with your students. This means that all international students enrolled at NYU could take no more than 1 class or 3 credits of online class that would count towards the full-time enrollment requirement. For more information on registration guidelines for international students, please visit our information page for academic departments.

Key OGS Priorities for International Students This Month- We are highlighting to students this month the necessity of in-person course registration for the fall 2023 semester and beyond. As mentioned above, we’re also telling all international students that they need to be registered full-time with no more than 1 class or 3 credits of online class that would count towards the full-time enrollment requirement in order to maintain their legal status in the United States. Keep in mind that international students who are unable to register full time must receive OGS permission to register for a reduced course load in order to keep their immigration status valid. For undergraduate students a minimum of 12 credits is considered full-time enrollment; for graduate students, typically a minimum of 9 credits is considered full-time enrollment.
- If students plan on traveling internationally (especially with spring break approaching), we’re encouraging them to review our travel page early on or watch our travel video to avoid any issues. We’re also reminding them to make sure that they have a valid travel signature.
- We’re in the midst of tax season! All international students received this tax email last month, and we continue to update them on tax webinars available to help them in the filing process.
- As always, all emails sent to students are directly linked from our Immigration Updates and Events web page.
