New CAS faculty research grants, student awards, and more

Dear Alumni and Friends: The fall semester is now in full swing, and the long hot, humid days finally appear to be behind us. It's my pleasure to share with you some of the latest developments from the College of Arts & Science, including recent and upcoming events, new research grants, and student awards.
- Our annual Discover the Sciences event, which was originated by yours truly as a modest "plug" of sorts for our biology, microbiology, and chemistry programs, was held just this past weekend. Discover the Sciences now highlights 12 CAS programs, and this year we welcomed 333 students and their parents to attend special faculty and student panels, research poster presentations, and building and lab tours -- highlighted by our recently completed renovations in Pearson Hall. More details will be coming in next month's Alumni Update.
- On October 20, Miami Galleries Day, CAS will once again join forces with the Cincinnati Museum Center to offer a potentially intoxicating new event for our alumni: Chocolate: The Exhibition. Miami faculty experts from chemistry & biochemistry, history, biology, English, and more will be on hand to present on the cultural, economic, and scientific history of chocolate, from its exotic origins in Central America to its technological innnovations in Europe and beyond. Stay tuned for more details next month!
- The Knolls of Oxford, a local continuing care retirement community, has announced that their affiliation with Miami and the Scripps Gerontology Center has earned them the 2018 LeadingAge Excellence in Innovation Award. This is a great example of Miami making a difference with our local residents.
