Milk Banks: The Wet Nurse of 2017?

By Ann Seacrest, RN, IBCLC, Executive Director of MilkWorks
Breastfeeding is an ancient skill that has been practiced by mothers from all walks of life since the beginning of time. For centuries, mothers relied upon a time-honored system to feed our infants. The food was free and perfectly designed.
Multiple social factors, including a focus on science and technology, the changing role of women’s lives, and our ability to treat infections with antibiotics, led us in a new direction. In the 1960’s, we abandoned breastfeeding and human milk without a smidgen of research to validate the change. Almost overnight, infant feeding became a $4 billion a year industry.
Going backwards is always difficult. The society we left in 1960 is not the society of 2017. When public health and medical experts made the concerted decision to reverse the tide and encourage mothers to return to breastfeeding, did they stop to think of the multitude of modern barriers to breastfeeding?

LB427: Designed to help pregnant and parenting students finish school

Introduced by State Senator Tony Vargas, Legislative Bill 427, requires accommodations for breastfeeding mothers who are students in a K-12 public, private or parochial school.

The bill, which was passed by the Nebraska legislature and signed by Governor Ricketts, establishes a clear, statewide policy for school districts to follow. Thank you, Senator Tony Vargas, and all those who supported the passage of
 LB427.

Baby, it's hot outside!

Another Nebraska summer is underway! Are you concerned about your baby getting enough fluids? Breast milk is all your baby needs during the warm summer weather, even on very hot, humid days. Keep in mind that a young baby needs plenty of breast milk and may feed frequently to stay hydrated. Read more about breastfeeding during the summertime!

Welcome April!

Meet April Jorgensen, a member of MilkWorks Board of Directors. April is a teacher librarian with Lincoln Public Schools and has two children.
April was motivated to give back to MilkWorks because of the support she received when nursing her second child. Her son did not breastfeed well in the first several weeks and his issues were not easily resolved. April was able to nurse Oliver for 19 months, but she attributes this to MilkWorks, "I am forever grateful to the lactation consultants and the staff at MilkWorks who helped me to keep digging to find answers to our problems." As a member of the board, April hopes to inform the community about MilkWorks and advocate for legislation protecting and supporting breastfeeding moms in our state.

Thank you, Penny Layne Photography!

MilkWorks O recently received a LOVELY gift from Penny Layne Photography - beautiful canvases for our walls! Penny went above and beyond, gifting us images for our Gathering Space, hallway, front area and one of our consult rooms. We are so GRATEFUL. Thank you, Penny!
