Luke 1: 11 - 17
11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. 13 But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John. 14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born. 16 He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

New International Version (NIV)
Are you surprised when God answers your prayer? A Spark teacher told an amazing story to our students in our version of a Disciple-now weekend. On a mission trip the teacher attended, a rainstorm threatened a construction project. The group prayed for the rain to go around. The rain fell on all sides but did not hit the newly poured concrete. My friend was amazed and astonished. Then one of the missionaries asked him, “Why were you surprised?” Good question!

Remember Zechariah was ready. He had waited his whole lifetime for the moment at hand to enter the temple and burn incense. He and Elizabeth had asked God for a son. Suddenly Gabriel stood there. He shook with fear. Gabriel told him not to be afraid.  God had heard his prayers. A son would be born. His name would be John. He would bring them joy and delight.

What kind of son was God sending the elderly Zechariah and Elizabeth? A great son.  What would be great about John? He would be full of God even before his birth. After he was born, John would turn people back to God and get them ready for the coming of the Messiah. Through John’s preaching, parents’ hearts would go out to their own children, and disobedient people would to the Lord.

Have we ever needed this more? When we pray, we are preparing ourselves for what God is about to do. God may raise up in this generation one who walks closely with God to prepare others to turn and return to the Lord. Pray that God will raise up great sons and daughters. Pray that our descendants will be full of the Holy Spirit. Pray that they will help others get ready to return to the Lord.  Pray that you and I will be ready.

Pray with me:
Father, you amaze us by your power. The story of your incarnation reminds us that nothing is too hard for you. Lord, if we ever needed you before, we sure do need you now, every day and every hour. Let each of our hearts prepare room for you. Make us a people ready to serve you. Do something in our day that turns the world right-side up. We have been upside down for too long, now. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
Our Monday through Friday devotionals are in the book of Acts this year.  We will not hurry through the book.  We want to see what the Holy Spirit did in the early church so that we may discern what he is doing in us and through us.  Join us for these devotionals as we learn together about our King and his Kingdom in the world.

We also invite you to join us as we read through the Bible. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
