Who taught you to talk?
Who taught you to talk?

Isaiah 50:4-5
The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue,
    to know the word that sustains the weary.
He wakens me morning by morning,
    wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed.
The Sovereign Lord has opened my ears;
    I have not been rebellious,
    I have not turned away.

New International Version (NIV)
               Who taught you to talk?  My brothers and I apparently have similar accents.  I think it is the Amarillo,Texas / Alaska / Florida / Missouri / Illinois / Germany / Maryland / Germany / Montana influence of our upbringing.

                The prophet was taught to talk by God himself.  He not only has to say something, but has something to say.  His words do not make people tired.  They sustain the weary.  One translation says, “He has given me the ear of a disciple.”  God gave two ears and only one mouth.  What does this mean?  Marilyn McEntyre wrote a book called, Caring for Words in a Culture of Lies.  She calls her readers to take good care of words. In her book she sets a good example of this in her writing.

                God wakens our ears to listen like one being instructed.  Like Samuel, the God who speaks to us keeps our words from falling to the ground.  It turns out we are all still learning to talk.  We repeat what we hear.  So we need to listen well to the voice of our Lord.  Every day, we need to listen to God at least as long as we listen to the news or look at our phones.  Let’s start today.
Pray with me:
Sovereign Lord, teach us to talk in ways that sustain the weary.  Waken us this morning to listen as life-long learners.  Open our ears Lord, before we open our mouths.  We pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
