In 1935, twelve philanthropic women joined together to form "The Cheerful Helpers" -- a group dedicated to serving young children. From 1935 to 1955, the Cheerful Helpers mission evolved into one consistent with an increasingly complex view of child development and autism. In 1958, the dream of creating a school for the understanding and treatment of emotional disturbances in preschool-aged children was realized when the Cheerful Helpers Child and Family Study Center opened on the campus of Mt. Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.
As we celebrate our 65th year as a therapeutic school we are grateful for the women who came before us. Their vision has allowed our organization to support hundreds of young children and families. The Founding Mothers' passion for helping others was passed along to family members, daughters who participated in Cheerful Helpers' Cameo Balls and donors who continue to support our work.
Just this week I was in touch with Sherry Winters. Her mother, Elaine Winters, served as one of Cheerful Helpers first Presidents. Sherry shared a memory of the Cheerful Helpers founders meeting at her house when she was a little girl. Sherry knew, at an early age, the value of giving to others and would save her allowance until a time that her donation could help close a fundraising goal. Sherry is one of several family members keeping us connected to the original Cheerful Helpers!
In the next few months, we will be using our Instagram account to share pictures and memories depicting 65 years of Cheerful Helpers School. The celebration will commence March 10, 2024 when we will invite our community to celebrate together. Reflecting on our rich history while looking toward the future and ways Cheerful Helpers can continue to thrive!
Details about the time and location of the event will be forthcoming.
