The 2015 SMPS Pacific Regional Conference will be held from February 11-13, 2015 (three days) at the Grand Hyatt in Seattle, Washington.  Come "rock the boat" with fellow SMPS members from across Alaska, Hawaii, Las Vegas, Orange County, Oregon, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, and Seattle. Event Recap:  AEC Psychic Readings - Where is my next client?
On September 24th, Calvin Yoshitake, Magician and Psychic Extraordinaire from Guida Surveying, enlightened attendees on how to read economic indicators - which ones move markets that affect the AEC world, how to interpret them, and how to use them to spot and capitalize on future market trends. Moderated by Shelley Santo, CPSM of Frederick Fisher and Partners, the event was well-attended and the energy between Calvin and Shelley shined through as they engaged the audience while providing economic and market insight.

Event Recap:  The Wind Down
Specialty cocktails. Breathtaking view. Who doesn’t enjoy happy hour?  Thanks to the Special Events Committee for planning The Wind Down, our autumn happy hour mixer, held on October 9th. The Perch Rooftop Bistro near Pershing Square in Downtown Los Angeles provided a relaxing setting along with scenic vistas of the downtown skyline.  SMPS/LA members and friends relaxed and mingled in a private section of the vintage bistro.  Everyone enjoyed this well-deserved break!

Event Recap:  Build Your Brand!  How your AEC Firm can win more Design Awards
On October 22, Mandi Roberts, Assoc. AIA -- Past Chair of the AIA|LA Design Awards Committee; John Berley, AIA -- City of Santa Monica Commissioner of Historic Architecture; and Carlo Caccavale, Hon. AIA -- AIA|LA Associate Director guided event attendees through the AIA|LA Design Awards submission and selection process.  The guest speakers also provided valuable first-hand insight into how the AIA|LA jurors select winning entries out of the hundreds of entries they receive each year.

Downtown LA's Millennium Biltmore Hotel held the SMPS/LA Healthcare Leaders Event on November 12.  The event was moderated by Stan Chiu, AIA, LEED AP -- Healthcare Principal at HGA Architects & Engineers, and guest speakers included Zeke Triana, AIA, LEED AP -- Director of Facilities Planning, Design and Construction at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center; Laurie Stone -- Associate Senior Vice President for Real Estate and Asset Management at the University of Southern California; and Christopher Brown, RA -- Senior Construction Project Manager for Real Estate and Construction at Providence Health & Services.  Together, the moderator and panel of experts shared their insights and expertise on how members of the AEC industry can differentiate themselves in this highly competitive market, and noted major pitfalls to avoid.

Work Less, Win Work, and Get Home in Time for Dinner
 
On November 19, technology and automation-minded colleagues gathered to learn about workflow automation. Daniel Ionita, Software Developer and Proprietor of UVB Design, and Cindy Ionita, Marketing Coordinator at Arquitectonica - Los Angeles, presented an introductory overview of various means and techniques to help AEC professionals save time and effort on repetitive all-consuming mundane tasks that we are all faced with on a daily basis.  Event attendees received a free copy of a list of organizations and municipalities that use the popular opportunities hosting site, PlanetBids.com.

SMPS/LA 2014 Holiday Party - The Spirit of the Holidays
AEC friends and colleagues gathered for an evening of relaxation and camaraderie at Kendall's Brasserie @ The LA Music Center in Downtown Los Angeles on December 4th.  Event attendees indulged in a wide array of wine, cheese and crackers, a scrumptious selection of hors d'oeuvres, and an even more impressive selection of mini desserts. Through the generosity of its members, SMPS/LA was able to donate a wide selection of toys to the Boys & Girls Club of San Fernando Valley and assisted the Military Women in Need organization with a $1,000 donation.

Event Recap: S.W.O.T.  - Who is pulling your strings?
On December 10th, marketing and business development professionals from SMPS/LA were treated to an informative and highly entertaining shadow puppet performance by Cristina Bercovitz, Marketing Coordinator and Puppet Master from Frederick Fisher & Partners. Shelley Santo, CPSM of Frederick Fisher & Partners then led an informal open forum discussion on the challenges of conducting a comprehensive S.W.O.T. survey and the trials and tribulations of using those survey results to improve upon their respective firms.
