Week of March 2, 2015
"I so love how the people I work with are so committed to go the extra mile to bring out the best in all of our kids. I love how appreciative our St M families are for all we do. There is never a day that I don’t want to come to work as there is so much JOY here! We are a truly a family. Once you have been part of the school, you are part of the school forever." --Carol Wise
WE TRULY APPRECIATE THE APPRECIATION! Thank you to our families and the SMPA for the wonderful Teacher Appreciation treats, cards and more. You kept us smiling all week!

EXCITING NEWBERY AWARD AUTHOR VISIT!
We are excited to announce that Cece Bell is coming to St. Michael's on Thursday, March 19,  to talk about her book, El Deafo, a recent 2015 Newbery Honor winner, with our 3rd-5th graders. This autobiographical graphic novel chronicles Ms. Bell's experiences in losing her hearing when she was young and celebrates the differences that makes each of us special. It is also the first graphic novel to ever win a Newbery award!

Mrs. Wise considers El Deafo one of the best books published in the past year. And this Washington Post article and numerous literary critics have said:  "Everyone should read this graphic novel."
We are partnering with our local children’s bookshop, bbgb, to make Ms. Bell's books available for you to purchase prior to Cece’s visit.  She will personalize the books and they will be delivered to your child’s class that day.  You may purchase your books online via the bbgb website.  Please be sure to use the code cece15 for a 15% discount on your books. (Note: any grade can buy a book and have it signed.)
Please place your order by Friday, March 6. When ordering online, please choose “school delivery” as your shipping method and be sure to complete the sections asking for your child’s school, child’s name, teacher name, and to whom the book should be signed.  Mrs. Wise is happy to answer any questions you may have.

Go FISH!   Join St. Michael’s parent, Tee Clarkson, and his staff at Virginia Fishing Adventures and Virginia Outside, for a Lower School after school fishing program starting Monday, March 23rd and running five Mondays through April 27th. (No class on Monday April 6th. Rain make-up day May 4th.)  Spring is the best time to be out on the water as the fish wake up from winter and the shad run up the river. Participants will learn the basics of casting and fishing techniques while fishing at the Singleton Campus lake, as well as local ponds around town and the James River.

Participants will be picked up by Virginia Fishing Adventures at the Lower School at 3 p.m. and dropped back off at 5 p.m. Open to Boys and Girls in 1st through 5th grades. All equipment provided. No experience necessary. Cost: $100 per child. (Limited to 12 students, prioritized from oldest to youngest and siblings.) Click here to register!

Check Mate! Championship Chess, our popular after-school chess program for Lower School students (K-5), is now registering for the spring session. The sessions are on Wednesdays from 2:40-3:40 p.m, beginning on March 18 and ending on May 20. Click here for more information and to register.
