Art Camp Brings Creativity to Life |
Submitted by 4-H Summer Intern Makayla Stommel
Last week, August 3rd- 5th, were three fun-filled days of Art Camp! Each day had a special theme: Art-Rageous 2-D, Super Sculptures 3-D, and Creative Cultural Arts. Throughout the week, youth got the chance to explore new techniques, materials, and art styles.
Day 1: Art-Rageous 2-D
The youth started the day with some name games and making their very own sketchbooks to draw in throughout the week. Next, youth learned how to do printmaking, followed by a stained-glass project. Then, youth did an acrylic canvas painting where they created their own unique designs. After lunch, youth dove into watercoloring and perler bead creations. To wrap up the day, campers experimented with oil and chalk pastels, learning new techniques, and ended the day with a snack.
Day 2: Super Sculptures 3-D
The second day was all about creating three dimensions! After a quick name game, youth learned how to stain their own wooden boxes before exploring sculpting with clay. They also painted rocks and pasta that would later be used in their coral reef creations. Youth then got creative with old CDs, turning them into fun animals such as turtles and fish! After lunch, youth brought their coral reefs to life using their painted pasta, rocks, and Model Magic to create colorful underwater scenes. They then learned how to make flowers out of felt before welcoming guest speaker and 4-H youth leader Hannah. Hannah taught campers how to create pinecone succulent boxes by painting pinecones to look like succulents and arranging them with moss. Youth wrapped up the day by painting colorful suncatchers to take home!
Day 3: Creative Cultural Arts
On the final day, campers traveled the world through art! Youth began with Aboriginal dot painting from Australia, using Q-tips and paint to create colorful designs. Next, the youth learned how to do Turkish marbling by adding drops of paint to water. Then, youth learned some origami and created a dog and a fish. After lunch, youth played a game outside, followed by creating tiki masks using yarn and feathers. Youth then created paper mosaics and learned to weave and make bracelets. Youth finished up the day by learning how to make bead animal keychains!
All three days were a huge success and full of creativity, laughter, and new skills.

Introducing 4-H Project Learning Labs! |
Looking for fresh ideas, ready-to-use activities, and practical ways to bring 4-H project learning to life? Join us for the NEW: 4-H Project Learning Labs, a virtual series designed for volunteers, youth and adult leaders, and anyone interested in helping young people explore projects in engaging and meaningful ways.
Our first session on September 24 will serve as an introduction to the Project Learning Lab series. This kickoff session will help participants learn how the series will work, explore available resources, and experience a brief sample project lesson. Most importantly, we'll gather your input on the project topics and learning experiences you'd like to see featured in future sessions.
Each Learning Lab will offer:
- Hands-on learning experiences
-
Shareable resources to use with your club or program
- Ready-to-use lessons and activity ideas
- Practical tips for leading project learning experiences
- A welcoming environment where no prior experience is needed
Whether you're a seasoned volunteer looking for new inspiration or are just getting started, Project Learning Labs will provide practical tools, creative ideas, and opportunities to connect with others who are passionate about helping young people learn by doing.
Come ready to explore, share your ideas, and help shape the future of Project Learning Labs! Future Learning Labs may be hybrid meetings, meaning we will meet in person in the county but will have a presenter virtually. There will be time for discussion after the lesson and planning time as a county.
