Hi Neighbor!

One morning last week, my husband and I were slugging coffee while my oldest daughter, Caroline, piled cinnamon sugar onto buttered toast.  She was telling us about the fitness tests in gym class and mentioned that she scored one second on the Flexed Arm Hang.

Her father said, “What?  One second!” and then chuckle-snorted... loud enough for us to hear, repeatedly.

I stared: “I cannot believe you’re laughing at your daughter.”

And Caroline said, “You sound like the dad in Back to the Future.”

Now, I could immediately tuck that early morning incident into the “Bad Parenting File,” the file that’s pretty thick by now, after twelve years of consistent contributions.  But, I’ll tell you, upon reflection, I’ve got to admit there are certain aspects of the exchange that I like.  It felt old-school, the opposite of helicopter parenting.  Potentially scarring, perhaps, but look at the way Caroline fought back, like a fencer, brushing away the attacker’s blade with her weapon of choice—an 80’s movie reference.

It was called the Bent Arm Hang in my era.  I remember my classmate Tracy, thin and sinewy, hanging for days.  I might have brought her a sandwich.  She’s probably still there.  But I, I was not a strong Bent Arm Hanger.  Upper body strength is just another gift I failed to pass on to my daughter.

It’s becoming more apparent, though, that along the way, Caroline has picked up a sense of humor.  We can only do what we can do as parents.  Then we hang on and hope for the best.

Enjoy!
