2022-23 Directory/Contact Info Updates
Mrs. Betsy Tyson

Faculty Update

Our Fifth Grade Team is Changing! This summer we bade a sad farewell to Mrs. Cheryl Munro who has set off to explore new opportunities. Mrs. Munro joined us in 2020 and in her two years at St. Michael’s she gave us a number of gifts. The “Best of Me” project allowed fifth graders to find their voices as poets, and her lively classroom discussions around literature and history enriched her students’ critical thinking abilities. Mrs. Munro seamlessly integrated technology in ways that sparked excitement and creativity in her students. Who would have thought it possible to build a colonial settlement in Minecraft? Thank you, Cheryl!

Though we will miss Mrs. Munro, we have been very fortunate to find Mrs. Betsy Tyson to take over the humanities side of the fifth grade curriculum, namely language arts and social studies. Mrs. Tyson comes to us from St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church where she has spent the last two years as chaplain, coordinating with families and youth in many of the church’s programs. Before that, she was a classroom teacher at St. Christopher’s School, and she has been an active volunteer at both Fairfield Court Elementary School and at Anna Julia Cooper Episcopal School. Mrs. Tyson was the recipient of the Hawkins Hideaway Prize for Loyalty and Service at St. Christopher’s. As a member of the strategic planning committee for the Center for the Study of Boys, she researched the social/emotional needs of boys, and she participated in the Central Virginia Writing project through the University of Virginia. We are so pleased that Mrs.Tyson will be sharing her experience and her love of teaching with us!

We also are bidding farewell to Ashley Buffey, Director of Extended Programs. Under Ashley’s leadership, St M’s Extended Programs (Morning Gym, Extended Day, After-School Enrichment, Summer Spectacular Camps) grew significantly.  In pursuing opportunities to strengthen these programs, Ashley developed curriculum and budgets, recruited and trained staff, maintained an increasingly vibrant program, and met all regulatory requirements.  Through modifying and adapting programs (i.e. Camp-in-a-Box, and the Color Pods), St M’s Extended Programs have blossomed and thrived - - even through the pandemic.  Voluntarily stepping forward to lead our Equity Committee, Ashley also stewarded the drafting of St M’s diversity statement and our efforts to be a safe and welcoming community for our students, families, and faculty/staff.  Needless to say, in three years Ashley has accomplished a lot! Please join me in thanking Ashley and wishing her much joy in her next adventures. (We also thank Ashley for her conscientious efforts to ensure that everything is in place for a good start to our 22-23 Extended Day program.)

As we move forward to secure a new Director of Extended Programs, please be sure to send any experienced, qualified candidate ideas our way.
