Following Today's Rally at State Capitol Honoring Victims of Annunciation Catholic School Shooting, Minnesota Students Demand Action and Moms Demand Action Call for Ban on Assault Weapons and High-Capacity Magazines

“No one should be scared to go to school out of fear of being shot. Our schools should be where our dreams are shaped, not our nightmares,” said Timberlyn Mazeikis, a former Michigan State University student who survived the mass shooting on campus in 2023 and now, a volunteer leader with the Students Demand Action group at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. “Minnesota lawmakers, on both sides of the aisle, must act to pass a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. That’s why we are at the capitol today: to ask Governor Walz to call a special session on public safety and demand our politicians prioritize our safety over the gun lobby's interests.”

“Schools should be places of learning and community, not fear. Yet children sit in class bracing for gunfire, knowing gun violence is the leading killer of kids and teens in America,” said  Dana Hagemann, a volunteer with the Minnesota chapter of Moms Demand Action. “How many more Americans must die before lawmakers ban the weapons of war that continue to show up at our schools when they become crime scenes. Last Thursday, DFL caucus members joined us in our call to ban assault weapons NOW. The question then is - will their Republican colleagues join them in prioritizing the lives of our children and young people over the gun lobby?”

If you would like more information on the dangers of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, or to speak with a Students Demand Action or Moms Demand Action volunteer, please email press@everytown.org.
